Okay, Crazy Idea #446. I got a flip-top gas cap for a 69 Charger off a forum member a while back, and I'm wanting to install it on my Roadrunner now that I'm getting it ready to hit the road again. I've always liked the looks of these caps, and I hate like Hell bending over to fill the tank using the filler behind the license plate. Always seemed like a pain in the ***. :)

So, here's the challenges:

1. Where to locate it? I think it would fit fine on the driver's quarter, but I have the Superbird decals back there so space is rather limited. I was thinking putting it between the PLYMOUTH and the stripe, but don't know how good that would look. I also considered the sail panel area, but didn't know how that would look either.

2. I have the cap and the bezel. I can mount the cap separately, which makes the footprint a bit smaller, but it does take away from the effect. You can see the differences in size in this example:

3. As for connecting the cap to the tank, I was thinking of getting a 69 filler tube, cutting it to fit, and then using rubber fuel line to run from the filler to the stock filler for the tank. Kind of a long fuel run. Plan B was to get a 69 Charger tanks and trying to adapt it to the situation, but that might be a lot of work.

So... I was wondering what ideas/suggestions you all might have?

I'd locate it in just the same exact spot on the quarter as the Charger is and go with a 69 Charger tank and fill tube. You're also going to need the sheetmetal from a Charger where the flip-top cap sits as it has a slight indentation in it to accomodate the trim ring. You'll need to cut a hole in the trunk floor and use a Charger filler neck seal where the tube passes thru the trunk floor.

I think this would probably be the simplest way and look the best after all is said and done.

I see that Bru has a third gen RoadRunner, so I need to back up a bit.......

You could use the filler tube from a second gen Barracuda(or a '67 GTX) instead of a second gen Charger. This would place the flip-top cap on the side of the quarter like the second gen Cuda's, instead of on the top like on a second gen Charger.

You'd still have to cut the hole in the trunk floor tho.....

Stinks that there isn't enough room for the cap and bezel on top of the quarter like the Charger..... I'd look at the Challengers for idea's, they to use a similar cap on the quarter that looks pretty cool as well. Like mentioned if using the whole thing you'd want the part of the Charger quarter that it mounts in, with yours painted already I'd copy the Challenger instead.

Ambitious.....

NASCAR has never allowed rear fill on fuel tanks to my knowledge and has always used a pit side fill. Might be a good place to start.

I was looking at a Challenger this morning, and I think that's a good idea. :)
