Hi Guys, in reading the service manual, it says you can change out the input and output shaft seals with out disassembly. I thought I read in previous post someone said NAPA sold the individual seals.....anyone have any numbers...or any numbers....thanks....

If it isn't a daily driver, take the seals out, and look for the "National" part # on the seal lip, or worse case, you measure the OD, shaft dia, seal thickness, and seal design. After you have that info, most places or bearing/seal retailers can match your seal.

Well, that would be good info in I can/could get it out with a readable number. Seeing one first would help with the removal, as I am thinking I shall destroy it getting it out. The service manual lists a tool for removal/install while still installed in the car. Doing a net scan with that tool number did not turn up one listed for sale. Think I read where a short piece of PVC pipe works good on installing a new seal....thanks....

Use a dent hammer removal tool, carefully drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal, thread in the screw, and viola, the seal will pop out (usually). The seal part number is on the rubber lip, so you have to look for it.

You could possibly check with Freedom Racing for a remover and installer: Freedom Racing: OEM Automotive Specialty Tools for Mechanics

Ok, got the one seal my NAPA guy had listed, its # 6141 and appears to the correct seal for the upper or input shaft. May be a few days till I actually do the install...will let you know for sure if correct. We found what we think is the correct one for the lower pittman arm shaft seal and it s on order. Will let you know if it is the correct one for the lower.....

Up date. I got the old input seal dug out using an awl. Tried drilling a small hole to use a screw but bit kept running to the side, even after use a punch. The new NAPA seal, #6141, was driven in uses a deep well socket. Seems to fit well and hopefully will seal well. My O reilly guy got me their cross referenced seal, a Master Pro 7188S, and it looks good....much cheaper than NAPA. Plan to install that one on my 73 box that is still in the car.

We found a seal supposedly for the lower, pittman arm shaft, a National Seal, # 222820. It looks right , but have not tried to install this one yet...will post afterwards.
