Using this illustration, I have 2 questions:
1. Is the 904 dimensions for BB and SB the same?
2. I’m swapping a 318 with 904 to a 440 with 727. Is the distance the driveshaft has to be shortened 4” (35-31)? Sounds too simple .

I would measure what you need after your assembled to be sure

As said above...measure when everything's in the car, there's a way to do it you measure center of trans yoke(with it 3/4" to 1" from being bottomed out in the transmission) to center of rear pinion yoke. Weight of the car on the suspension. I think I got off the subject a little.. to answer your questions 1) 904s don't bolt to big blocks and 2) yep you just need a slightly shorter drive shaft but it may not come out to exactly four inches, that's why you need to measure..

I have a new yoke not yet on the drive shaft. So stick it in the trans with it 3/4” short of bottoming out, then measure center of front yoke to center of rear yoke and give the driveshaft garage that dimension and they do the rest?

Yep! If you can crawl in from the back and get a good number, that's best as the car will be on the wheels
