Howdy - my name's Alex, I hail from Minneapolis and I just bought my first Mopar: a 1971 GTX. I've been trolling around this site for the last couple weeks and I'm glad I found a solid group of Mopar guys...it seems like a very cool site!

I spent the last 7 years with a fox body Mustang and had a couple 2nd generation F-bodies before that, but have always dreamed of owning a big block Mopar. The Mustang is quick (runs low-mid 12's) but these old Mopars have so much more personality...and they're actually worth something, which is a plus :D

On to the car - here's the back story: It's an original 440 4brl/727 auto car, has been in CA its entire life, has 38k original miles and has been driven a whopping 3,500 miles since '79! It was originally sassy grass with a black transverse hood stripe (no vinyl roof), and was repainted black in the '70's. Up until '78, the car had a six pack on it and was raced regularly, until the original tranny blew. My cousin in law bought it from his uncle in '79 and essentially parked the thing, claiming that he was afraid to wreck it (which I totally undertand now). Six years ago it was repainted again (kept her black), and they replaced the gas tank, fuel lines, brake lines, etc. It was driven about 70 miles since the repaint six years ago, and was dropped off at my house on Monday...:headbang:

It's got headers, a Torker intake, a (small) 625cfm AFB carb and some pretty bitchin' 70's touches throughout the interior. Best part is the car is just as clean underneath!!! Here are some sub-par pics...

The old slot mags and window tint might have to go...I'll post some more pics up this
weekend...

Cheers,
Alex

I dunno- that thing's a time capsule and the alum slots would have been top of the heap in 71...jmho I would leave it alone; just make it safe to drive.

Jim - I hear ya man. The mags are already growing on me. It definitely needs more tire in the rear - it's only got 245's out back.

Welcome aboard Alex, very nice Mopar there!

Thanks for the welcome and compliments guys...I'm all about the 70's vibe and it'll be tough to change much. If I do go with different wheels, I'll be sticking with something period correct...

Sitting for so long obviously didn't do a lot of good for the car mechanically - it's missing bad/running rough right now. I'll be doing a thorough once over/tune up this weekend, and probably spend some more money I don't have :) Good times...

Welcome Great looking car!

Excellent car! I'm also from Minneapolis, maybe our paths will cross someday. I understand your cousin as well. I bought a Satellite because I wouldn't want to butcher such a classic car. Then somebody mentioned that the Sebring Plus is almost..but not quite as... rare as the GTX. As interesting as that sounds, I doubt they will ever be worth as much. You did very well.

Beautiful car! Welcome to the site from the Motor City! It looks great just the way it is. Any plans on going back to Sassy Grass?

Thanks again guys! Believe me, it's tempting to turn it back to Sassy Grass and wouldn't be too hard considering the fact that the body is so straight/rust free. Then again, it looks real mean with the black on black combo and the majority of the color change was done pretty well...plus I'm broke...so I doubt anything big like that'll happen soon. Maybe I'll build a Sassy Grass scale model?

And Day1 - whereabouts in Minneapolis do you live? It'd be cool to meet ya and check out your car. Didn't they only make 3,200 or so Sebring Plus's in '71? Very cool and randomly collectable...

GTXplicity,

I live in Savage, And You? You can see I have quite a ways to go.... Check out my thread in the Members Restorations Forum. 71 Satellite Sebring Plus 383 Slapstick Auto. It would be cool to get together some time.

Nice GTX. The black looks nice, but Sassy grass is one of my favorite Mopar colors (petty blue, sassygrass, hemi orange, sublime). I would be torn as to which color to paint it, too.

Pics of the redonkulously '70s interior?

Here are a couple shots of the interior after I cleaned it up...gotta love the added 'Waldoch Conversion" wood grain gauge cluster! The seats are a classy combo of original vinyl and crushed velvet inserts, and you gotta appreciate the 25x4 watt Kenwood tape deck from '84! I still can't figure out where the steering wheel center cap came from, but I'll probably just replace that with an original. Anyway, most of it cleaned up real nice, however, when I took out the center console I uncovered an afro pick, a utlity knife, a mountain of mouse crap and a condom wrapper. I'm not kidding :hello2:
