New issue with the Charger

While out cruising with the kids today the old girl really started missing, blubbering and nearly stalled but came right out of it after about 10 seconds. Every since it got really hot out it has also been harder to start at times, sometimes taking several seconds of cranking when it has always started instantly. It acted like an issue with the fuel getting to hot, My fuel line is attached to the frame right beside the headers (wrapped headers) but I used braided hose off of the fuel pump and have it mounted out away from the motor so I think that's alright. Thinking about insulating the line along the headers and installing a phenolic spacer. What worked great for you guys.
 
my first guess would have been the coil... does it start up cold? and how old is the coil.... first step is to go to a news stand and pick up a copy of mopar monthy and get a subscription and read on and eventually there will be an article on it and fixed.

The whole ignition system is new, Mallory 6 AL box, Mallory Distributor and MSD coil but that doesn't mean it's any good. It's hardest to start when it's cold but has always started with just a touch of the pedal to set the choke until now. Next time I go out to start it I'm going to pull the filter first to see if I get anything out of the accelerator pump so I'll know if it's not getting fuel. I find it hard to believe that the carb is boiling with the exhaust crossovers blocked off and air being able to pass under the intake but who knows, Think I'll at least try an insulator gasket.
 
1/2 inch spacer. Be aware of hood clearance, mine has the power bulge. Wrapped and rerouted fuel lines to help with heat soak and boiling of lousy fuel. Had similar issues even when engine temp 180. What was the ambient temp?
 
Does it have vacuum or mechanical advance? The vacuum advance canister may have went bad. Or the ballast resistor may not be reducing voltage anymore. I'd check the quickest and cheapest items first.

(DOH! Didn't read your last post about the ignition system being new.)

As you can see, no hood clearance issues however I don't what to go to high because I don't want to have to make the shaker hood to tall. image.jpgimage.jpg
 
One thing about our old mopar iron is they always had a problem with boiling the gas back out of the carb when we shut them off. High outside temps make it worse. That is why Chrysler came out with the Thermoquad with the plastic body to help aleviate the boiling process. The phenolic spacer should shunt some of the heat transfer and help some.
 
Phenolic spacer does help, I installed 1/4 inch spacers on my 6bbl (would have gone thicker but have clearance problem with air grabber) and wrapped the fuel lines from pump to carbs, seems to have fixed the heat soak issue.
Mine never putzed out while driving but had hard starting problems when hot.
 
Just ordered one of those 1/2 thick Heat Disapaters from Mr Gasket. I like the muti layer idea because with every layer you loose some transfer. Also have some heat insulation coming for the lines.
 
i ran a return line from my regulator back to tank, this got rid of all my fuel boiling issues, i just have other issues that i am over trying to fix.

Is your electric fuel pump in engine bay
or back by the fuel tank
 
I have a mechanical fuel pump putting out 7 psi and no return line since there isn't a regulator. I'm going to try and get a pressure gauge hooked up where I can see it from the seat next time.
