Bulkhead connection on the firewall
Hi my name is dario and im new 2 the forum, i have a 1969 gtx clone with a440 wedge with a .30 bore, 727 3 speed with a stall conveter, been working on it for almost a good 8 years and finally after a new engine and transmission finally got it running some what decent, would love if any one could help me with any of the small problems im having or any tips would b greatly appriciated
Dario; Check the bulkhead connections on the firewall, main wiring harness/bulkhead connections, many of the electrical problems are attributed these connections, also to bad corroded rusty burnt/fried connections in those 3 connectors in the main bulkhead {
or any other places on these 40 year old cars}, take it apart very carefully, they can be really brittle plastic & can break very easily, clean the connections, both sides, with small brass or stainless wire brushes, pipe cleaners, toothpicks, toothbrushes what ever works, etc., then use an aerosol electrical spray cleaner, that will evaporate & not leave any residue, to get the rest of the bulk of the corrosion rusty oxidation type crud out, when reassembling them or any other electrical connections, use some
dielectric grease on each individual connection, it will help with connectivity or continuity & keep out moisture, that is the main cause of the problem in the 1st place... Also
grounds need to good everywhere, I have added grounds to insure better continuity, you should use a sufficient size Ga. wire & solder the ends & use shrink tube to seal them {
#6 is what I used}, I have grounds from the
engine to the firewall, from the
alternator housing to the body, from the
body to the sub-frame & use star washers under all the connections at ground... There is a great website
www.madelectrical.com , great tech tips, schematics/wire diagrams, relays, fuse-able links, in-line fuses & connectors, arming switches, breakers, wiring, connectors & supply's etc., there are many other tricks, all the under-dash, engine & lighting harness go thru a large black wire that goes to & thru the AMP gauge, you can relieve some of the path traveled by adding a #8Ga. wire from the main 12volt charging terminal/threaded 1/4" stud on the back of the alternator to the
Starter Relay under the main bulkhead connector, 5/16" main large threaded terminal {
it shortens the path the charging system wiring & take some of the load off the AMP gauge connections}... Post a separate thread on your problems, in the appropriate section, someone here can usually help you & it will get allot more exposure than just the Welcome Wagon section... The photos belw are just examples of where problems can be found like, gauge clusters printed circut boards {
Charger example} Starter relays, voltage limiters, different types of voltage regulators & alternators, ignition & wiring...
