I am new to racing, and am trying to grasp the concept of the stall converter.

My question is: if I have a 2500RPM stall, how does that drive on the street? Is it manageable?

Here's where I am planning.

I have a 68 Road Runner with a 383 and 3.23 gears.

Exhaust headers
Edelbrock performance intake manifold
Demon 750 carburetor

I am not replacing the Road Runner (440) cam and valves or doing any other head work for now.

It's got a torqueflite 727.

I am going with 3.90 gears and 15 inch wheels (28 inch tall tires, compared to the stock 25 inch).
That puts it at 3365RPM @ 70 MPH.

Redline is 104MPH at 5000RPM, but I'll be going to the local 1/8 mile strip so I'm not too worried about top speed at this point.

I am trying to keep it good for the street or strip, so it's a lot of compromising at this point.

Thanks!

It'll drive ok with 2500 stall. Main thing about racing is go to gave fun, make friends, & have fun. You don't have to be fast... just consistent.

Your 383 will go much more than 5000 rpm in Stock configuration. .. I would be ok up to at least 5800.. let that 383 wind up. They need rpm.

I also am new to it and already thinking how I can go faster. I ran 18.5 at 75 mph with a 318 and had a ball.

converter.jpgI have a 5200 flash converter and it drives just fine on the street. I don't drive it as a daily driver at all, but I do drive it into town to McDonalds, Orielly's and to local car shows ( in between the drag race weekends, lol )

Wow your car brings back memories. I ordered a new 1968 RR same color as yours , two door hdtp with a black vinyle roof . Same driveline that you have and several trim options. Loved that car.
I think you will be happy with your choice of converter stall....................................MO
