Hi im new as a poster but ive been reading this forum since i got my charger. I have a 1973 dodge charger with a 400 in it and i just removed the engine for a mild rebuild but while its out i want to do a new wiring harness but i want to make it myself (i know im crazy). The old harness is deteriorated and the fuse block is a lvl 10 fire hazard so why not go custom? i was curious if someone has made or knows someone that has made a custom/more modern harness and if they have a diagram/tips/hints that could help me. Thank you in advance!!
Ps..try not to hate on me if i use wrong terms and such im new to classics

Look at American Autowire for custom wiring harnesses.

or Yearone for original plug and play harnesses.

See i've seen these kits bit i really want to make one myself to learn as much as i can. I'm a competent solderer and ill probably end up making my own wiring diagram but i cant seem to find a wiring diagram including the connector on the transmission (automatic 727 not manual) and other such things.

Becarefull with MyMopar diagrams! They miss a lot of stuff ( specially acc ) on every diagram since 71

Even using diagrams that come with wiring kits can be misleading so heads up fo sure.

building your own harness certainly can be done and in the long run come out a little neater in the bay than a pre made harness. After ripping out all of my wiring and a complete redo with Ron Francis wiring kit, it will be a chore! My advice no matter which way you end up going, either building your own or buying, is make a plan, take pics and do not try to do i all in 1 night. With wiring, you don’t want to rush things. One big advantage to a good purchased harness is you’re going to get the right gauge wire and accessories within the harness. Nothing usually missed or forgotten, but there comes that plan! Not to discourage but you can still learn a ton with a good pre made harness!

Good luck!

some diagrams... posting Rallye cluster, dunno if you got that or standard cluster

going to give it a shot once all of my materials I will update on progress soon:thumbsup:

If you are going to mimik the OEM, lay it out, secured on a piece of plywood and cut the harness open. This way you can get the wires to the right lengths without guessing. You can also make adjustments for things you potentially added, say electronic ignition modules, etc.

Good Luck to you!
I had to replace my 72 non ralleye dash harness and there was just enough electrical in mine that it was a chore just plugging stuff in correctly. Certainly not modern car electronics but a lot to me.
