Stay away from groups like United Way. They will not allow a personal meeting with a family nor even let you contact them. I guess it's a who gets the credit thing. Some church organizations operate the same way. We got lucky when looking for a family just when the news of the fire hit and contacted the station doing the story. Took a while, but they finally gave in and gave us some contact info once the family found a place to live. It took a good month of calls, emails and several follow up calls and emails. We also made sure from the family, they were ok with us bringing toys. We also got permission to ask the station if they wanted to do a follow up on the family. Our club just voted to go this route with our donations in 2011. We gave to established charities this year but starting in 2011 we will look to help local families in distress like this.
