My odometer was not turning and I finally decided to remove gauge cluster to take a look. There are two worm drives that operate the odometer numbers, the one that is driven by the speedometer cable seems to have some teeth damaged. Would this cause the speedometer to bounce at low speeds. I tried cleaning everything and even inserted the speedometer cable while i had it out. I did see the numbers rolling over when i did it by hand. However now that its back in the car it seems like the odometer numbers are turning too slow. Does anyone know where i can source the two plastic worm drives?

I'll have find the business card that repaired a newer mopar speedo but how's the cable grease? I had a dry one years ago and used speedo grease and bingo, no bounce. Just my 2 cents and I'll find the card

I've bought non working speedometers on ebay for cheap for spare parts. This might be an option? Or post a WTB add.

I had the same thing with the speedo starting to bounce and clicking heard from the cable just when my odo jammed up and stopped trying to turn over 5 digits. I just unhooked the cable for now. It's been too hot here to work on this kind of thing in my garage. I am assuming I have the same problem with stripped teeth but won't know until i get it out to look. I assumed the clicking and bouncing was due to the cable trying to move the odo and slipping.

I have a related question.................If I remove the cable out of the top end to clean and grease it, will it re-engage with the gear in the transmission when I re-insert it or do I have to take the bottom end out to make that happen? I have never had a speedo cable out before. Thanks.

Ok guys I found the card and I hope they can help. My PMs are acting weird but this might help [email protected] If mods are cool with posting a number I would but message me and if I can receive I'll pass it

Should be able to rock back and fourth with fingers til it engages if that makes sense then speedo head you'll engage when snapping back into speedo if all that makes sense.Ive never had to remove the button section. Cover your interior, grease is messy

Kind of like trying to turn the cable while engaging the trans gear? If you engage the trans gear, then you won't be able to turn the cable with your fingers anymore. If it turns with your fingers, then it's not engaged. Also, if you think it's engaged, then driving the car will turn the cable so you can see it before connecting it back onto the speedo. I really don't want to remove the trans gear!

If it's like my 70 remove the loosen cable nut off lower trans (your speedo top end is already disconnected I'm assuming) pull your cable out, clean and grease, slide back in,seat in speedo gear, tighten nut, go on top plug into speedo and speedo will rotate some and plug in. Viola done

Thanks much! So, less messy if cable comes out the bottom and does not get on my WHITE interior! When I get the odo fixed I will follow your suggestion.

Was thinking of mine back in 86 and the Speedo (gauge end)ferrule might hamper pulling through that end and might have to come out through bottom
