I just swapped in a 1978 360 engine. All is good but my oil filter leaks (slowly) onto the exhaust pipe. I'm on my second filter (K&N first, now a napa gold) in two weeks. Both leak the same. Is there a trick to this? Special filter? This engine came out of a Karry van.

Have you checked to be sure that the old rubber gasket came off with the old filter? Two gaskets will leak.

Not to state the obvious - but make sure all of the old gasket is removed. Check for damage to the surface where you screw it on. I'm sure you've already thought of those - but simple things can cause it to leak......

Are you using a 90 degree adapter ? If so it could be from the block to adapter gasket ...

Don't know. You can see it in the picture.

Maybe you overtightened the filter and the gasket became distorted enough to leak.

I only hand tighten my filter approximately three quarters to a full turn after the gasket makes first contact.

That's what I did. Hand tight. Is it possible to replace that face plate?

Pretty sure there is a gasket behind the faceplate. A cardboard like ring if I remember right.

Side note...on any oil filter with a rubber seal, you need to wipe a few drops of clean oil across the seal, before you put it on! If the seal is dry, it can kink, making a leak. The wipe of lube, lets it slide into place.

Thanks. Did that too.

Since this engine sat on the ground with the filter on, I'm thinking it may have rested on the filter and warped the plate. What is this plate called? I need to just replace it and need the name of it.

I'd be surprised if the plate was warped, take it off and put it on a flat surface and check it. I'd still bet the gasket behind it is what's seeping.
