Hello,

I have a 500ci B Block and my oil pick up came loose. The threads on the pipe don’t exactly line up to position it correctly.

Any suggestions on how to get it set in position and keep it in place?

Thank you

It's pipe thread. Keep cranking it another turn. Don't forget pipe thread sealant

I had an aftermarket pickup that had a 5/8" fine thread instead of a 3/8" pipe thread. It screwed in loosely, until it bottomed out and came up solid. There was no way to adjust the position. I cut the thread off and welded on a pipe nipple, which solved the problem. I think it was a Moroso brand pickup.

I used plumbing pipe thread sealant (pipe dope). You could also use Teflon tape.

Pipe sealant like Loktite or stuff you would use when running natural gas?
Yes, for automotive if you can get it. Mine is loctite or permatex or the like.
Many places to use it on a motor. Intake bolts, waterpump bolts, sending units, exhaust studs etc

It was probably straight pipe thread, which is what the factory used, not tapered. Most aftermarket pickups use tapered pipe thread. Be particularly careful when using a 1/2” tapered thread pickup, as they tend to crack the block when going the next revolution to get it tight and In the right position

It wasn't straight pipe thread. It was 5/8" national fine. I know the difference. The thread pitch is the same but 3/8" pipe thread is larger in diameter, by about .050". A 5/8" fine thread nut fit perfectly on my pickup. A 5/8" NF nut will not come close to starting on a 3/8" pipe. The pickup rattled into The block threads until it bottomed out and would not turn after that. The pickup is1/2" pipe with an adapter welded on the end to supposedly fit non hemis. As stated, this was a moroso pickup in an unopened package.
