Will priming the oil system fill the oil filter?

Sure, it's not like the oil has much of a choice.

Though I will say, I usually try to fill the filter up 1/2 way up and let it sit for a bit before installing it.

I always begin with priming the pump OUT of the engine. I've seen once or twice where the pimp will not prime installed because there was no oil film on the rotors and it would not have suction. Stupid as that sounds, I've had it happen.

True. I believe some of the older Chilton manuals recommended packing the pump with petroleum jelly before reassembly for that very reason.

I pour STP with ZDDP into the oil pump before putting it on..... Then I prime the engine with a drill.....

Are all the made chrysler priming tools basically just a rod, or is there better ones that bolt down to the distributor hold down? I only find the rod types. Any suggestions on best place to buy?

Yes it will. Please keep in mind the engine's valve train is oiled through the camshaft though. There is a drilled passage hole in the #4 cam journal on big blocks including the Hemi, (#2 on small blocks) that directs the oil from the oil passageway from the cam journal to the cylinder head oiling hole. The oil then goes through a cast in rocker shaft mounting boss on the cylinder head. Because the oil passageway in the camshaft on the #4 journal on Big Blocks, (#2 on SB) is what sends the oil to the top end, (rocker shafts and arms), you need to turn the engine over to oil the right bank and again into a different position to oil the left bank. I always do this prior to starting an engine for the first time. It ensures that your rockers, valve stem tips and push rods all have a good coating of oil before starting. Mopar performance offers a priming tool part #P4286800. Use a 1/2 reversible drill and hang on. When the pump starts making pressure it can rip the drill out of your hands if your not ready for it.
