i am rebuilding a 1977 318 and need to know does the oil pump need a gasket between the block and the pump thanks for any help

No gasket needed. I know aftermarket pumps can come with one. You can use it but if the surfaces are flat with no nicks you can go without. Best to torque the bolts. If in doubt you could always use a thin film of loctite gasket maker on a dry clean surface and let it cure.

I agree, but I use one anyway because I worry
about surface imperfections.

But I worry about everything way too much!

Anaerobic sealer works well. It is vert thin and dries in the absence of air
