At 17, the memories stick.
Two vehicles. A 1969 Mercury
Marquis, a 1964 Ford Falcon.
Mercury: Factory 429
Falcon: 260 w/ 3/4 cam, holley
4bbl, high rise and headers.
We were tasked with building
a cistern well system for an
age old town in Pekin, ND.
With the job complete, and the
ol' man's tendency to over indulge,
we packed it up and headed home.
110 mph the entire trip home.
The little Falcon led the way, but
me (being a passenger) in the
Merc could tell the Merc was
capable of a few more ponies.
All this on nylon tired, -20 temps,
and a greater power watching
over us.

My step-dad Bob a Union Pipefitter,
did much the same in his hopped up
53 F100 with a 352FE different heads (428 IIRC)
different cam, intake carbs (not sure what) headers
T-10 trans, 4.10:1 Dana-60, that thing was cool, fast too...
(I 1st learned to drive, in that truck at 10 y/o)
or his 35 Ford PU cool bronze color,
with a Buick 401 2x4bbl Wildcat (?) engine
& LeSal Trans & Dana-60 4.10:1 rear
I remember that lil' hot-rod truck, when he 1st married my mom,
in 1965, I was 6, I thought it was the coolest/fastest thing ever,
the coolest dad ever...
That passed in time too...

He'd roll into his 64 GTO after he retired it from H/S NHRA racing
another car with 4.11:1 gears Muncie 4 speed
(he had a bunch of fast Pontiacs/Firebirds GTOs Judges)
My mom drove us to meetings/school in the 64 GTO
other kids dug that car, she did too
my oldest sister Lori got to drive it to HS (lucky)

or my Mom's 57 DelRio Ranch Wagon he/Bob built for her
our family car in early 1967
had basically the same engine/trans combo as the F100, lil' milder cam
no as much gear either...
or her 1st ever new car, ordered new from the factory, late Nov. 1967
(I remember it well, I owned it in 1979 to about 89)
a GG1 & white 1968 Sport Satellite 383 4bbl 4 speed 3.91:1 gears (spec. order)
my mom was a lead foot too...

Had a good friend in HS who's dad
owned a trucking company. Pretty
well off for 1970 standards. My 'ol
man would let me drive the Falcon
to school once in a while, and on the
days he didn't, my friend would come
by and offer the ride. Didn't know
which one to expect. The salmon pink perfect shape '55 bird, or the '69
dark green Mach 1. At 17, envious
that some guy 17 years old would
have two cars to choose from.
Both showroom new.
I also remember the Plymouth we used in driver's Ed. The hood on that
car looked as wide as a football field.
Intimidating when meeting oncoming
traffic on a California back road
barely wide enough for one car.
I remember a lot of cool cars on
the road.
Darts, Coronets (my favorite Mopar),
Bugs, Triumph's, Corvettes, T-Birds,
Mustangs. Barracuda's, Novas,
Americana at its' best. Not too many
trucks. though '64 short bed Chevys
we're just starting to come into their
own.
