I have to say that you can never over look anything no matter how bad it looks.
I found a nearly complete 400 today that had been hauled off to be scrapped.
A friend of mine has a friend at the scrap yard that sells him stuff along if its mopar related. So this mornig I had to go over to my friend to sell him a few parts he was needing. I get there and we are talking about my projects and I tell him I am looking for a 400 block to make a stroker out of. He says I have a engine back here i got from the scrap yard if you are interested. So we go look to see what he has. Now I have been looking for an early 400 block preferably a pre 10-10-71 cast block to get the thicker webbing for a good while, but had nearly gave up as I could not find one close or at a resonable price. Anyway I get back to the engine and it looks to have been thrown from a truck and nasty and dirty, but I roll it around to see a casting date of 9-9-71 JACKPOT! Its a early "230" casting 400 block so I made the deal and $50.00 later I had myself the block I have been looking for. I took the heads off and it has never been apart and is still a standard bore engine. It did have some flash rust in the bores, but I believe with a .030 bore it should be good as new. Just thought I would share a few pictures as I was very happy.

Yes, thats a great buy! I just built a 451 using a 630 block and it runs great! Even gets tire chirp when the stock 727 hits 2nd gear. And thats with a 2.76 rear gear in a 69 Road Runner at 5000 feet! So I'm real happy with the build as I'm sure you will be too. Since I bought the first 400 out of Ne, for $300, I found 2 more in Denver for 250.00 each that I picked up. One had a steel crank, and a Holley Street Dominator intake which works real well. I also have a Weiand team G intake, and a TM-6 for a low deck 400 if you int. Oh yea forgot to mention I'm running stock H P Exhaust Manifolds with stock mufflers and tail pipes. These motors are awesome!

Yeap, I picked it up to do a 451 or alittle bigger build. I have gathered enough parts to pit it into a long time 67 dart project I have. I am planning on running stock BB a body manifolds as well so I will not go to wild. Everyone seems to have good results with a 400 based stroker engine.

Good Fortune

Hey Matt,

Great to see you have some great luck. I'm very happy for you. Awesome score and from somewhere you would not really expect. I like to think your good fortune is Karma considering how well you treated me in our transactions and how helpful and honest you were!

All the best with the project Matt. Can't wait to see some pics!

First off thank you for the knid words on the engine find.
I Started a thread on my 67 dart alooong time back when I was getting the mini tub and moving the springs inboard on FABO. I just have to get back to it now.
If I started a thread here on an A body they might drive me out of town.
BTW I need the clone army to come over to get my projects finished!

A little bit from star wars. The had the army of clones all dressed in the white suits.
With the several cars I have have laid back as projects I need an army to come over while I am at work to finish them all.
Guess All I can do is take my vitamins as hope for a looooooong life......

You are one very LUCKY guy there Matt. Glad you found what you've been looking for. Enjoy and keep us posted of any new developments.

good deal. Most stroker kits are 0.035" over for a 4.375" bore. I think the piston ring selection is bigger and cheaper in the 4.375" bore size.
