I have to say that you can never over look anything no matter how bad it looks.
I found a nearly complete 400 today that had been hauled off to be scrapped.
A friend of mine has a friend at the scrap yard that sells him stuff along if its mopar related. So this mornig I had to go over to my friend to sell him a few parts he was needing. I get there and we are talking about my projects and I tell him I am looking for a 400 block to make a stroker out of. He says I have a engine back here i got from the scrap yard if you are interested. So we go look to see what he has. Now I have been looking for an early 400 block preferably a pre 10-10-71 cast block to get the thicker webbing for a good while, but had nearly gave up as I could not find one close or at a resonable price. Anyway I get back to the engine and it looks to have been thrown from a truck and nasty and dirty, but I roll it around to see a casting date of 9-9-71 JACKPOT! Its a early "230" casting 400 block so I made the deal and $50.00 later I had myself the block I have been looking for. I took the heads off and it has never been apart and is still a standard bore engine. It did have some flash rust in the bores, but I believe with a .030 bore it should be good as new. Just thought I would share a few pictures as I was very happy.
