One of the best race movie

Yep that was a great movie, James Garner & Steve McQueen both were both involved in racing & drove many of the scenes themselves, I saw a documentary about the making of Grad Prix a while back, I'm not sure what network, it was very informative, showed a bunch of the actual cars & how they set up some real race cars with cameras & the likes to shoot a bunch of the real race scenes at different historic tracks all over Europe...

Other decent racing movies

I saw that one a while back it was a decent car flick for sure... How about "Gumball Ralley", for a comedy it was a decent car movie too, I love that 427 Cobra... or "2 Lane Blacktop" for a street racers early 70's movie, were Dennis Wilson's main lines are "I need to check the jets & adjust the valve" on the 55 Chevy racing there way across the country... or "California kid" were Martin Sheen drove the iconic 34 Ford black with flames, against a crocked sheriff, that ran a speed trap town & that killed his younger brother, "I think it was"... or The old late 70's movie "Hot Rod" were the guy wrecks the Hemi Belvedere in the beginning, then puts the engine in a 40-41 Willy's... also Hollywood Knights cool old car flick, American Graffiti & More American Graffiti very good story line, Gone in 60 Seconds lots of cool cars, Macon County old 57 chevy on N20 way before anyone used it, they are all some decent car movies, not really race movies though....

Hey that 2 lane blacktop a Story of two men drag racing across the country,in a primer grey 55 chevy. James Taylor is the driver. Began a cult film ...

As Pops1967GTX said, "Gran Prix" was and is indeed a fine racing movie. It won several awards for cinematography, and was noted too for it's score. [I still have the album] The story behind the movie is interesting, as much for what you do see as for what you don't. Par example, notice the lack of Lotus? The absence of Coopers? The missing Matras? Well, that's because Steve McQueen was trying to do a GP movie at roughly the same time and had contracted those teams first - the BRMs, Brabhams and such were quickly snapped up by Frankenheimer's crew and tracks were rented in order to foul up McQueen's schedule... Ferrari wanted nothing to do with either of them, but some good film making and creative salesmanship saw Frankenheimer find favour with Il Commendatore and really enabled his movie to stand out.
If you're really interested, and I mean REALLY interested, go over to the Autosport.com forums, and go to the Nostalgia subsection. There's the mother of all threads there about this movie. I mean there are guys there that have built complete dioramas of all the different tracks in the film, built models to match the film cars and can 're-enact' the races to show who would have been where at any point on the circuit. They can also point out any inconsistencies and differences in any of the cars, including "incorrect" dampners and exhaust systems for the 65 season proving that certain bits of film were spliced in later... It's unreal.
As far as just for the racing, I would highly recommend Steve McQueen's movie "LeMans". Pretty darn realistic with some obvious cinematic license, but told from a racer's point of view. As is 'The speed Merchants'.
Funny Car Summer is fun too - and I'm in a background shot of that one myself! :)
Might also check out "Une Homme et Femme" - A Man and a Woman. Set against the backdrop of Ford France testing and the Monte Carlo rallye, it's got some good car stuff and a storyline that will make it enjoyable for non car nut spouses. "Winning" with Paul Newman fits that genre also.
And don't forget the original 'Cannonball Run' done by Brock Yates. Silly, but fun and a LOT of truth in that one if you happen to know some of the stories behind the original Cannonball...
Check out Redline 7000 and Speedway with Elvis for some vintage nascar. [and a stereo playing in a daytona coupe...] And I really like Elvis in "Spinout" - interesting and esoteric sports cars in there.
And wasn't it 'Bikini Beach' with Frankie and Annette that had the Greer Black and Prudhomme fueler in it? And the custom Cuda in 'fireball 500'. and, and... :)

Cult following

Yep that was a cool old movie, "not a great movie", the acting was horrible, the story line & 55 Chevy {I think it ran like high 11's or 12's, you could hear an announcer at what ever track it was some were saying the ET/mph} with a 1 piece tilt front end & a BBC w/2x4bbl tunnel ram, was pretty cool though, but I'm an ex-street racer & long time drag racer, so I kind of looked past the really bad acting of Dennis, James & whom ever that blonde chick was... I like the 69-70 GTO Judge that was in it also.... The guy who drove it was such a B.S. artist, I don't remember the actors name, but he was in a ton of movies in the 70's....

Warren Oates. He also played Sgt. Hulka (?) in stripes. Great actor.

Warren Oats that's right, I couldn't think of it for the life of me, Thanks

Grand Prix, Le Mans, and other movies of the era are great reminders of how things were such a short time ago. Look at what the cars are like now. What a difference.

Greased Lightning and The Last American Hero give a pretty cool look at NASCAR racing in the 60s and 70s.

LOL, I'm not sure I would thank me. I actually had to look it up after I posted the reply. (Had a sudden case of doubts.....) Bwa ha ha ha ha.

Yep I liked Last American Hero, it was loosely based on Jr. Johnson, I liked the big block 57-59 Chevy truck with the hooch dump/fuel tank on it... Greased Lightning, sounds very familiar, who was in it or what was it about ? I know I've seen it...

Heart like a Wheel decent movie with some old dragsters & funny's, the Shirley Cha Cha Muldowney story... Red Line 7000 was that the one with James Conn in it ? as a Nascar driver, I'm not sure if that was the Elvis or James Conn movie or not, bad memory, I got sometimers

Grand Prix and Lemans are classics, This thread is excellent! Thanks for the info.

One of my favorites movies is:

C'était un Rendezvous ("It was a date") is a short film (under 10 minutes) made in 1976 by Claude Lelouch, showing a high speed drive through Paris in a Ferrari 275GTB.

The film shows an eight-minute drive through Paris in the early hours of the morning (05:30hrs), accompanied by sounds of a high-reving engine, gear changes and squealing tires. It starts in a tunnel of the Paris Périphérique at Porte Dauphine, with an onboard view, exiting up on a ramp. The sound of Lelouch's Ferrari 275GTB V-12 is quite distinct.

It is a great flick to put on and turn up the volume! That 12 cylinder Ferrari is like music!

Ma Snart
