HI ... I WENT TO A PRO-COMP DISTRIBUTER AND COIL ON MY 1971 SSP WITH A 440 AND DIRECTIONS SAY I NEED TO REMOVE AND JUMPER MY BALLAST RESISTER TO GET 12 VOLTS TO THE IGNITION WIRE ... I DID REMOVE IT BUT STILL ONLY GETTING ABOUT 8 1/2 VOLTS...:book1:

ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT I MAY BE OVERLOOKING ? THANKS

thats strange,8 1/2 volts is almost exactically what you should get after a ballast resitor reduces the voltage.make sure you are getting the correct wire.normally the ballast sits on the firewall towards the pass side of the car.the 12 volt(sorce)is normally on the terminal towards the drivers side of the car on the ballast.

Ya its strange ..it tested the same before and after i removed it and i tested the main wire too and it was just under 9 volts almost like there is another resister some where that im not seeing ... May have to find another spot to hook up to

I don't know about Mopars but Chevy's use a ballast wire to reduce voltage. Is the wire a silver color instead of copper?

Not sure what color the wire is ..i never cut them to bypass the resister .. I made a little jumper wire ... But the wire coating was brown

You know, I wondered about this as I just installe a new Unilite in my 17 SSP. The instruction said to place the red wire from the distributor on the 12V side of the ballast. I turned the key to the on position and my 12V current was comming from the left side single wire terminal (facing the engine). I had always thought the source was on the right side double wire terminal as you said. I checked the double wire and had nothing with the key on.

Take a look, if it's silver it's a ballast wire, copper will give the full 12v not the silver wire.
