Hey guys,
So I'm trying to decide what i should do, Right now my Satellite has it's original 318 with a mild cam, headers, 360heads and internals? 4brl with a holly intake. I was planning on dropping a 440 with a 6pack in it but I'm wondering if i should just keep this 318 and stroke it or keep looking for a 440 to build? Not sure how much hp it would take but I'd like to get into the 11's to heads up race my dad. The only reason i'm considering building my 318 now is because then i don't have to upgrade everything for a big block but since it's a clone i thought i should drop a big block.
I don't know what do you guys think?

Thanks,
~Nick

Nick, your looking at 500 HP to run 11,s the best way to get there is cubic inches,a mild built 500" stroker, good trans and converter, mid to high 3,s gear set will see 11,s all day long reliably.

Thanks, would that be alittle much for a daily driver? That's a stroked 440 right?

Stroked B or RB block, lots of combo,s. Could be hard on tires and won,t have the fuel economy of a 318.

Thanks, just taking a guess B means big block like a 383 400? and RB meaning 440 and 426? i don't think they get much worst then the 10mpg i already get but yeah i wasn't sure if there was something ok on gas that could make power? and really i don't plan on going 11's next week just would like the option. Also though of maybe adding a little spray

Though none of this will help you to get into the 11's, I believe I can shed some light on why your gas mileage is so low, and why you have (I'm guessing) terrible performance (based on the information you have given).

318's had extremely low compression stock (mid 7's:1), at least the couple I have measured did.

Throw some large chamber heads on and you will be in the high 6:1 ratios.

A larger cam will bleed even more compression off, and the larger ports (heads & manifold) will kill velocity.

I'm guessing that you are nearing high 80's to low 90's cranking compression, which is about the minimum necessary to even make an engine run.

The most cost efficient mod you could make would be to go to a 360 motor, and swap out your cam carb/manifold, etc.

This could double (or more) your power and mileage.

Not an answer to your question, but I hope it helps.

Thanks,
The engine doesn't run bad i hit the gas and the tires start spinning. I have no idea on the compression though, So maybe thats it? I'm hoping it was just running too rich.

Just wondering I found a 66' New Yorker for $650 i know it's not a b body but would it be an ok donor car? could i use the mounts and stuff? The ad said it needs some engine work but it's a 440 with ac. Has long as the engine isn't to bad i though it might be a decent start?

Sure would,My brother bought a 66 New Yorker and dropped the 440 motor and trans into his 68 Sport Satellite ,this was back in the mid 70,s. It,s not High performance but a good foundation to start with.

Sweet thank you, maybe i better go check it out. The chart i was looking at said 66' 440 came with 350hp/480tq? I know thats not the spec on a New yorker but i can't see it being to much different.
