Ok, new to the site. Been trolling it for a couple months now looking (and finding) valuable input on what I have started on.
So here's our story, My ol man restored a 69 gtx in the late 80's. He was a service manager at a local Chrysler dealership at the time. I have pictures of a rolling chassis with fresh paint from a weds morning, and I have pictures of the car as he drove it to the car show that Saturday. He enjoyed it that weekend, then lost all intrest in it then stashed it in a barn. It's got a built 440, six pack, 4 speed. My bro and I were usually pretty good at getting him to pull it out at least once a summer, run it out of gas, let us wash n wax, then stuff back in the barn.
In the past year he has suffered some terminal (as the doctors say it) health problems, and I have taken it upon myself to get the ol boat revived so we can enjoy it. My bro has been a real big help, and is more knowledgeable about mechanics then I am, both of us are pretty good. I design nuclear valves, hes a toolmaker. (he has a 73 duster, 383 crammed in it, 88 ram built 400 in that) I just never had the cash to do those things. His duster was found with a slant six when he was 16 for 150 bucks. Can't find those deals now.
The car has never ran right, puffin smoke out always, but again, never any reason to tune it as the ol man always had other agendas. Got parts for the six pack on the way. Have already improved it greatly with a few tweaks to the point it will idle when sitting still, no more white smoke, opened up the outboards mechanically as there's no vacuum getting thru them, and they were also sticking. Huge improvement already. Parts to fix that should be here in the next couple of days.
For a few summers now the throwout bearing has been making a horrendous noise, so that was our first order of business. He also had a pistol grip which was not correct as it would hit the dash and consol in every gear. So I found the right shifter for the car from brewers, got bent over pretty good for it but I'm happy to have the right thing in it now. Also decided it needed a new clutch, so got one of them also. Tranny work done, works great.
Leaky radiator, Took a 2 hr drive to summit to pick up a Griffith? I think it was radiator. So far has been good, had to replace fan with flex fan upon radiator installation tho.
Leaky gas tank, rock auto shipping me new one, will also be here in the next couple of days. Will probably have to get a new fuel tank sending unit for it too, gas Gage does not work, tested it tonight and the Gage itself is good.
leaky exhaust, giving us headaches. Found in the ol mans scramble he didn't exactly tighten the pipes to the manifold. Problem gone. (found a few other "shortcuts" he took along the way to get the thing assembled in three days. Can't leave outside, leaks badly.)
Old starter hated to crank, replaced with one out of an 88 ram 360, cranks great now.
Disc brake conversion, manual drum brakes all around are out, putting discs on front, leaving manual. Big Issues we still need to resolve with this before we can really begin pounding.
This has been everything I've done in the past month or so, trying to get it on the road a lil bit before it's back to the barn, but only for winter this time.
Body wise is all good except a few spots where the paint is starting to bubble at the bottom, the old master cylinder leaked all over the firewall, n chewed up the paint, and and old f-in ladder fell over in the barn and took a nice chunk of yellow out right on the bottom of the passenger side door. Spring time it's getting fixed.
I will put up some pics in the next few days, this project has put my jeep building in the rear view mirror for sure. Next things I wanna do are new wheels, and a good exhaust. Probably wait till next spring for those. Anyone got good ideas on wheels? I will have a few months to search.
