I just installed a Painless 6 switch panel with rocker ignition switch and starter (old fuse box now removed). Considering I know very little about wiring I followed the directions to a tee and everything seems to working fine.

I’m not getting much of charge out of the alternator now but I didn’t before I installed the Painless panel either. I think the alternator isn’t powerful enough for the electrical needs (fan, fuel pump, and water pump). That’s another job.

Is there now any reason to use the keyed ignition? Would wouldn't affect charging system at all would it?

Thanks in advance
Jack

Just make sure you have 12V at the dark blue wire to the regulator (terminal "IG") when the ignition toggle switch is on. Your alternator may not be enough with the added draw but you can at least check the output with a volt meter to see if it's working at all. Check the voltage of your battery with the car off first. Then with the car running at a decent RPM, check your voltage again. It should be in the neighborhood of 13.5V. If it's 12V or less running, your alternator is not working.

Ignition switch would not have any effect on alternator charging. What ignition box are you using? Are you using the stock stuff from the time period or using like an MSD 6al? old stuff or new all use a voltage regulator of one kind or electronic if that is bad then the output will be low. need a little more info on the setup you have.

Thanks for the help. I did need to run a lead from ignition toggle to regulator. Now charging fine.
