I am working on a 64 plymouth fury and need some opinions from people who have completed a car before.

Right now the major bodywork is complete with the car "roughed in" in primer.
The underside, inside, trunk, and engine bay is painted and the drivetrain is complete. The interior is completely gutted and everything will be replaced.

My question is what would be a better approach, get the interior finished first or paint the car first? Part of me wants to do the interior first so that i can crawl around without fresh paint everywhere, and also without any glass installed.

The other part says i should paint the car so that i dont have to tape a bunch off or chance getting black overspray all over my new red interior!

Has anyone had any experience with this and might be able to give me advice in order not to screw up one or the other? This is my first car so i just want to try and do things in the best order if you know what i mean.

thanks

If you got it all apart I would have the jambs and window openings cut in and install the windshields and side glass. The rear window regulators are a PIA. You can tape the windows up and lower them down far enough to tape the interior openings. I should have installed the side glass, front and rear, before we painted the car, after it was cut in. I wouldn't have been so nervous about scratching the soft paint. As it was I scratched it installing the window fuzzies and the painter, a friend, had to fix it. Put the interior in last. Make sure you have some help around to install the seats, easy to scratch the rockers with the seat studs.JMO I'm sure other will have theirs. Good luck and lets see some pics!

Thats my plan as well my windows are a pia the quarter windows were taking them out i ain't scratchin nuthin.

I painted my car before I installed the interior. Didn't have to worry about the interior getting messed up. I also painted mine with the windows out. I didn't have any problems with the paint getting nicked or scratched.

I painted my car first, then did interior, biggest thing to watch is getting the seats in without hurting the paint, as mentioned, im guilty of that nicking one rocker, luckily at bottom almost out of site and not to bad. Good luck!

Well theres plenty of paint jobs going on out there with the interior still in the car, check the body shops. I usually do the jambs and paint the car with the doors and fenders on and shut, less chance of sratching up a new paint job that way. And the exterior paint looks more uniform if you spray the whole car at once. So Id say if you want to do some interior work after the body work is done and all you have left is to spray the outside I think youd be safe not making a mess.
