As I was ordering some primers to work on some small stuff, I noticed they sold gas tank paint. Has anyone painted their gas tank before a reinstall? Positives or negatives for this? I wasn't going to paint the outside but I just may try it.

Installed a new tank in spring so I roughed it up & used VHT clear wheel paint. Am hoping for a little protection from salt/moisture.

Mines painted. No problems.

Although not even close to being original (unless you were attempting a body-in-white look), I shot mine with Rustoleum 7769 (fish oil primer) and then white (heat dissipation). It just depends what you want to do with yours.

Thanks. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Flaking off is a concern. Just didn't know how much protection it would give me or if the protection is even needed.

I used Eastwood's "Tank tone" on the original tank on my 60 Dart. It was pretty crusty but I wire wheeled it and used the Eastwood product. Still looks pretty good for being on there for over 20 years

That is the product I was thinking of using. I have a brand new tank but figured it may help.
