Morning
So my 1969 Coronet finally went to the painter yesterday. I had the car media blasted and primed before it sat in my garage for over a year. My painter doesn't have a rotisserie and isn't going to paint the bottom of the car. I thought about having undercoating reapplied but the underside is literally spotless now and I am thinking of just rattle canning primer and then rattle can painting the underside. could use some opinions on this subject. thanks Erik

You did all that work media blasting. Get the underside painted properly imo. You won't regret it. My Cuda had its underside painted and it looks great. It really stands out. Since its already at the painters, I'd send it elsewhere after to get the bottom done. Ask the painter for some paint so the match would be perfect. Don't skimp on it now...

If you do go the rattle can way, get the code of the paint from your painter so you can get some put in cans. Just stay away from undercoating as it has a reputation of hiding problems. You could apply some sound deadening spray on the bottom, then paint it too.

Thanks. Yea I'm going with a factory pack black. No metallic, no pearl, so easy match. But I will get some of that paint code in rattle cans. I figure I will do sound deadener on the floor (either lizard skin, dynamat, jute cloth or some combination of all of the above).

You could buy a reasonably priced HVLP gun and paint it that way if you have a compressor. You're not looking for a class A paint job under it and you will most likely spend less than doing the rattle can stuff and you can use the code for that too but I'm betting you won't need to. Once it's done, you'll have a gun to do other projects with and will have some experience under your belt not to mention you will probably have a better paint job to boot.

DON'T DO IT............. I wouldn't even consider rattle can, you want something really durable. To me the first thing I'd consider is where you'll be driving it, I have a long gravel driveway and lot's of chip and seal roads so I sprayed mine with a quality bed liner. If your on all paved roads then just get a good quality paint. Rattle can paint is just to thin and doesn't protect worth a crap.

Use a single stage paint on it! Don't rattle-can it! Take it to another bodyshop that at least has a body lift so they can shoot the underside. Some shops won't spray paintsout of their booths, and I can't say that I blame them. Getting someone with a rotisserie in their shop might be worth the extra cost. I saw some of the newer IMRON onE-Bay yesterday, 99L (Black) that wasn't too expensive. You don't need reducer with it, just activator. Good Luck!

Yea never mind on the rattle can. I just talked to the paint store. I'm going with a product called alk200. It's basically industrial enamel for frames, undercarriages. Going to rent bottom feed hvlp gun and go to town. Thanks for stealing me clear of that mistake.

And don't forget to get a respirator.......

Sounds like nice stuff! Made by PPG? Ahhhh! I love when sanity returns!
