The parking brake on my 69 RR is a bit loose and tends to hang down, which in turn triggers the brake light switch every time I hit a bump

Didn't see a return spring, but there is a hole on the pedal arm where I think there should be one.....

Anyone happen to have an exploded view diagram of the pedal setup?

Also, where can I get a replacement spring online?

Sounds like the cable needs some adjusting I don't believe there's a return spring on the pedal.

There is no return spring on the pedal the return spring is on your cable where it attaches inside the backing plate at the park brake lever for the back brakes

There is spring on the rod that has the brake release handle on it. It's a long spring that goes from the end of the release rod opposite the handle and touches the tab the rod runs thru that's close to the handle. Here's a post with a good picture:http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/mopar...0-Mopar-B-Body-Parking-Brake-Pedal-SUPER-NICE

I've found a replacement spring at a hardware store and cut it to the right length and it worked perfectly.

The spring on the handle rod only returns the handle itself, it don't return the pedal at all

There is a tiny spring inside the E-brake housing that attaches to the big end of the foot pedal; it provides the tension when the foot pedal is pressed down. I know because when I refurbished my unit I somehow biffed the end of the spring and launched it across the garage. It's gone forever. I've looked in the usual places and can't find it - probably need to source a complete unit. Or as LT said above, grab some springs from a hardware store and start fitting.

To replace the spring the entire E-brake unit has to be unbolted from the car; you may be able to keep the cable intact and twist the unit around to gain access to the top. If that doesn't work then the cable has to be disconnected too - it's a pain.

The OP's problem does not sound like a broken spring internally or on the handle by what they are mentioning, not on a 69 RR. On a 71 they have a spring attached to the mechanism that aids in returning the pedal but NOT on a 69. That tiny spring inside the mechanism could very well be broken and adding to the problem but on a 69 it keeps the teeth meshed internally so when you depress the pedal is stays down when the tension is applied, that spring and NO other spring in the mechanism returns the pedal itself it is a matter of adjustment as mentioned in post #2 or a problem at the back brakes as i posted.

Thanks for the explanation Moparparts, it makes sense now that it's an adjustment issue. So if that little spring were broken than the parking brake wouldn't engage without the tension, but it has no effect on pedal softness once the brake is disengaged.

To resurrect a very old thread, I am having the same issue as the OP. All the cables have been replaced and are moving freely. The parking brake pedal engages and ratchets as it should, and when it's released the pedal comes back up. The problem seems to be that the pedal drops (from the up position) under it's own weight about a 1/2" and causes the brake light to come on.
