Penetrating Oils

Machinist's Workshop magazine

recently published some information on various penetrating oils that I found very interesting.
Some of you might appreciate this. The magazine reports they tested penetrates for break out torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a

"scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oils ........... Average torque load to loosen*

No Oil used ................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ..................... ... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .................... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...............127 pounds
Kano Kroil .................... 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix............53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone.

Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results.
Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is almost as good as "Kroil"
for about 20% of the price.

Steve from Godwin-Singer says that ATF-Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50-50 mix.
*ATF=Automatic Transmission Fluid

I have had good luck with the atf/acetone mix...but i dont like the fact that it stinks like azz...

I do like PB blaster for a off the shelf penetrating oil...

what, no fluid film??? this stuff is better than kroil IMHO

Dang that's pretty wild. I used to use liquid wrench then switched to PB.
But these folks are not selling anything, i'm impressed

We had some penetrating at work that some company chemist concocted and all it said on the can was 'penetrating' oil. We called in panther piss...and it worked pretty good but I don't have any numbers on it but it doesn't matter, the company took it off the shelf. We had this 'coin your idea' program that you could turn in an idea and if it saved the company some money, they would pay you if they used the idea. Well, the company used the oil and even canned it but according to the employee, he never got paid and when we started having to list everything on a MSDS sheet, he told them to go jump. Anyways, my 10 year supply :D is about to run out and I'll try the ATF and lacquer thinner since I have plenty of both.

I've seen the acetone and atf thing everywhere online and have yet to see anybody try it on anything. It's probably a bunch of hooha.

no, it really works mang...it just stinks like sheet, and you have to shake it before each use because it separates quickly...

I'll believe it when I see it. Got some pics?

pics of what..?

it's penetrating oil, so i cant really show pics of how it works...can you show me pics of how good kano works..?...i can show you a rusty nut on, then a rusty nut off, which only proves i turned a rusty nut with my wrench..you want to know how well it works, then mix some up and try it...i personally don't like it due to the nasty smell....i use PB...

I use PB as well....but in the so called comparison, it seems the stink stuff works much better. I'd like to see that for myself so I might try it. If I do, there will be pics.

50/50 acetone and atf

Mixed up a batch 50/50. Try to keep it mixed it seperates very quickly. I mixed up a batch to use in a 66 383-4 Br that is stuck fast,it has sat for 20+ years.I tried to keep it mixed by shaking and filled the cylinders full last Thurs Jan 9.The engine has oil in it,the hood was still on the car,and the anti-freeze was good to -50 below.I have tried to turn it with a 3/4 drive with a 3 ft cheater and it still has not turned. I am parting the car out real rusty, but less than 100k.

I've got a locked up 1960s Ducati 250cc single motor that has been soaking in an ATF/Kerosene mix for literally months and it still won't budge. I've tried heat from a propane torch on it too. I'm at the point of wanting to try something more drastic to get it to free up, like bring it into my backyard and pouring BBQ lighter fluid on it and setting the top of the piston on fire or getting out my drill and Sawzall and hacking it apart.

They dont even have the best stuff listed that stuff that comes in the orange can with the ?german name? ir is that the Kroil? have to go look now
