I can't help you with a 65, as my Coronet is a 67. The channel I believe you are referring to is not for the top well itself, but is actually for the convertible boot. The boot slides into that channel from the side to secure the leading edge of the boot to the back of the passenger compartment (not really part of the seat itself on a 67 anyway). Thats why you'll see most Mopar convertibles have the top boot either lying in the well or draped over the back seat when the top is up. Its not always easy feeding the boot along the channel all the way across, so most owners, who use the boot, leave it attached at the channel.
