First off all A very Happy New Year to all in 2021.
Im working slowwwy on my 1978 440 engine need some advice from the Group since i know nothing on this topic . I heard if you have a standard bore and its a little loose you could put a 10 over ring in place of the standard ring . Is this a good or bad?
Ty all for your input and help
Edward

Someone with more knowledge than me will advise you but my thoughts are this. Could you hone a cylinder and throw in .010 oversize rings ? Maybe, assuming you can get those rings but the question is why would you.
A cylinder as far as I know does not wear perfectly round and cylinders need to be checked with a bore gauge or Tee gauges and a mike.
010 rings are only half that diameter bigger all the way around but still
Your engine might start and run but how well, compression, oil consumption is anyones guess.
I guess if one had unlimited hours and the enthusiasm to try what your asking they could try it but rings, gaskets cost money and if money is the issue, my advice is wait. Wait until you can afford to bring the block to a good shop and let him check the entire block, and bore the cylinders

Consider what I did
I got a short block, was told it was rebuilt, I worked with the guy I bought it from, he bought it years earlier from someone. He wrapped it up in plastic but when I looked, it was filthy dirty, so I disassembled it, cleaned it the best I could and re oiled everything
I had someone test run it and it ran pretty good.
I installed it in my 69 sat and it had a knock at around 2 grand. I drove it and heard it knocking. I posted here and the guys all helped but in the end I pulled the motor. I did the next engine the right way, had a excellent shop rebuild it
The old block I gave away and to make a long story short..... It was discovered that the crank, main and rod journals were cut 010 undersize.
One of the rod bearings was stock, somehow someway who ever assembled that engine put one wrong size bearing in and that was the knock I heard.
That mistake cost me money....
So I know this is getting away from what you ask but me, id say no to what you are asking and id advise do it once and do it right
Best of luck and happy New Years to you and yours

You might go .005 over but I wouldn’t go .010. They will have uneven pressure for starters, at the gap and mid point. If it really needs .010 over then the pistons won’t fit properly anyway. Typical file fit rings are about .005 over. What’s the out of round right under thebring ridge?

File fit rings are your best bet. Oversize,,,not a good choice. Also, how much clearance are we looking at?? I hear of guys coating pistons to take up a few thou and tighten them up.

You'll probably end up with piston slap. Oversized rings need oversized pistons. Imo.

Ty All for your input and thoughts so far , when i go deeper on this i will post my findings on bore size and check cylinder bores for out of round ...one more thing to do
