When using plasti-gauge to check my bearing clearances, is should i put oil in the bottom half where the crank sits in? Or should I put the crank in dry and just make sure it doesn't turn?

And make sure you get all the plasti-gauge cleaned out before final assembly. I know, sounds like common sense, but a guy i knew in SC rebuilt his 350 two times because of plati-gauge left behind.:hello2:

Chevy guys...

I find this unlikely. Plastiguage is oil soluable and will dissolve quickly. I usually clean it off anyway with WD-40.

The reason the fella built his 350 twice was because it was a CHEVY, lol...

Ok, thanks guys. Just wasn't 100 percent sure on that. Speaking of putting as engine together I went to My local Bensons auto parts and they don't have any assembly lube or Moly grease for cam break ins. All they had was this white lithium grease in a tube. What do you guys use for assembly on bearings and camshafts?

I stand corrected 69Bee, http://www.plastigaugeusa.com/how.html , it is oil-soluable!!!

Guess i should take what SBCheby guys tell me with a grain of salt.
Good info on that link, tells you everything you need to know about squishing plastic noodles.

I used AMSOIL Assembly Lube when i built my motor, there's a ton of different kinds, but that's what was recommended to me.

Is that Amsoil assembly lube like a grease? or a thick red ish oil? I have seen a few different ones used. As for the chevy guys, I have learned over the years that as soon as they say chevy turn and run lol. Whether its a 500 hp 307 or a big block 305 they always put their foot in their mouths. HAHA.

Red or grey, don't remember. It's been a few years since i've used the stuff. I've used Permatex moly lube too, which is grey grease.
