Pop top gas cap rebuild question.

I have a beautiful 68 charger pop top gas cap. How do you rebuild them? No chrome issues at all. The center stud that the spring and cap with rubber ring mounted on broke off. I have others that are not very good. I was gonna take the stud from one of those and muggy weld it back in. Replace the spring and rubber disk. I just cant figure out how

to get it

apart. Can that rubber seal be replaced?

Maybe a fuel resiatant bonding agent or sealant.

Does the inner section with the rubber gasket come out or was it supposed to last FOREVER?

All things considered its been for ever in the life of a car. By todays standards and the hopes of some they should have died and been barried years ago.
We are just to stubborn to let them die.

Unless you a building a museum piece, just buy a repro cap. For a repro, they actually look pretty decent & they are cheap enough.

Just by chance that is not a flip top for a lockable gas cap?

Nope. The one on the right is missing the innards...so to speak. Of course it looks great. That's why I would love to used it
