Been searching pretty hard for a project car and I think I finally found a winner. I have been talking with the guy and got a lot of pics. I posted some to a photo album called 70 Road Runner. Looking to see what others think about the car. It is a numbers matching 70 Road Runner with fender tag, broadcast sheet, etc... The body has some rust issues that need to be addressed, such as the drivers side floor board needs a patch, the rocker on the passenger side needs repaired, trunk replaced, and so forth. Looking to see if $6500 is too much for a project like this.

Thanks,

Craig

pictures will help!

I uploaded to my photo album, but lets see if I can get them on this thread.

They're in is photo gallery.

The car doesn't look too awful, but that rocker area is gonna be UG LEE once you open it up. Are there any more parts (bumpers, grill etc.) that go with it ?

The plus side is with the matching number drivetrain, fender tag and build sheet, you're far ahead of many people that take on a project like this. Take a car without the docs in similar condition and say you get it for $3500. At the end of the day, after you've spent $25,000 on the restoration, the value difference on the car with the pedigree is going to be greater than the initial spread of 35 beans.

I like the car, but Id like it more at $5500

The car has the grill, bumpers, etc... The guy has sent me a ton of photo's and I dont have them all uploaded. Lately, it seems I keep getting outbid or show up too late to the party, but this car has all my requirements so far. Here are pics of underneath:

I like it better at 4 to 5K and that's if you really want it bad. It's going to cost upwards of 10K to get this car into presentable condition even if you do a lot of the work yourself. I don't want to discourage anyone from taking on a project, but you need to go into it with your eyes wide open.

don't buy any car without seeing it in person. lay out all the parts he has, and see what is missing. glass, bumpers, trim, trans crossmember, nuts and bolts, etc. get underneath it and check the frames(they look ok in the pics, but someone under coated it, make sure it wasn't to hide anything). It has air shocks, make sure the shock crossmember isn't beat to death. Not a bad project, but I'd like it better for less $
good luck!

:iamwithstupid: And see it in person, if you can... My $0.02 cents
I wouldn't buy a car with out seeing it in person 1st,
Even off Craigslist or E-Scam...
No matter how great of a deal it may seem to be,
rarely they are what's represented by the seller or what you can only see in photos...

Sorry for the seemingly pessimistic/negative attitude crahill39...

But for example;
I got my last 68 RR in the peak of the muscle car price wars 2005 guy was asking $10k,
I got her for $6k running & driving, everything there, all intact, all the trim, all the glass,
all the interior black in great condition, not hacked, all with a clear title up-to date title in Calif.,
that needed work too, it had 63K miles, it was rode hard & put away wet miles, even with some extra parts,
but it had a big crease down the whole driver-side, he didn't know how to fix, but all orig. repairable stuff thou,
all with a numbers matching org. 383ci 727tf 8.750" 3.23:1 sure grip, RM23 Decore package car,
with far less rust or work & it was cheaper than, that 70 RR "basket case", no offense meant...

I'm not trying to discourage you either,
but there might be better cars, for that kind of price or near that price out there,
you may have to travel to look at them or spend some more on shipping to get it home...

It might be worth looking some more...

good luck, I hope you find what you want for a price that's good for you

Looks like a $650.00 parts car to me. Even if you could buy it at that price, a proper restoration is going to exceed the value of the car, and that's if you do much of the work yourself. To pay $6,500.00 is insanity. It's only a 383 car & there's plenty of better examples out there.

Here, save yourself the aggravation....

i think 6500 is high. it also depends how much you really want this car. In addition whose doing the metal work, body and paint. Your going to find way way more rust issues then what you describe if you blast this car, which id say you should.
like the other guys say you got to know what your getting involved with

RC is right, it's a buyers market for some nice cars. As much as I like to see them "saved"'' (by someone else) there are too many nice cars out there. Unless this is just therapy.

It's going to cost upwards of 10K to get this car into presentable condition even if you do a lot of the work yourself.

I just did a 69 RR a short time ago. I think your number is a little low. I cranked about 8 grand worth of material into mine with these same sheet metal issues, same or less issues I should say. A pair of AMD quarter skins, a full trunk floor, trunk extensions, 1 rocker repair, 2 lower fender patches, 2 outer wheel houses, 1 AMD bumper, 1 front floor pan. Above that there was gaskets/weatherstripping, all the glass seals, a windshield, a vinyl top... the only interior work I did was a carpet and a headliner, the rest was good. I had various hardware kits for fenders, bumpers etc, I did zero mechanical work. I mean not even a brake job or a set of valve cover gaskets. I had a few decals and all the paint related products, fillers, epoxy prime, surfacing primers, sand paper, tape, color/clear.

I did everything myself so I'm only counting material cost.

This car will need everything I just listed (minus the vinyl top) plus it will need an interior, engine work, possibly trans, unknown on the other mechanicals such as a K frame rebuild. brakes, bearings/bushings, seals etc.

I think 16,000 in materials will get you close with this car, but in the end with wheels/tires, exhaust, trim work etc... 18,500 in "stuff".

If a shop does the car for you, 10,000 to 12,500 in labor. (that's with a very affordable shop rate, I'm thinking 250 hours at least on this car)

You'd be into the car for 25k if you did everything yourself. Worse case I see $37,500 with a responsible shop doing all the work, or somewhere between 25-37 if you do some or most of the work yourself.

On this car's best day, freshly restored... you have to ask yourself if you think you could get $37,000 for it.

I personally think you'd be a little upside down on this one in the end. There are drivers out there, nice driver quality cars that can be had for $18-$20k

You will blow past 20k on this car immediately and you'll just be getting started, I mean you won't even be able to see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel at the 20k mark.

Take that all into consideration, and if it' sounds like what you want to do and what you want to spend, then it's the right car for you.

That's my 2 cents, sorry they are such ugly pennies.

You guys all made great points. I appreciate the input, and I will probably pass on this car. I have a shop now and want to do as much of the work as I can, but this may be a bit much. Never thought it would be this difficult to find a project car that won't put me upside down before it's all done.

crahill there is going to be a long process doing this car and a lot of money going into this build and you are looking to see if this bird is worth putting $6500.00 into it to purchase it ,answer hell no ! but if you add around #17000.oo to your $ 6500.00 you could be driving this bad boy

A lot of folks find that driving them is more fun than building them. I'm one of those people, lol.

If you can find a driver for 20k that you can tinker with and make gradual improvements to as you enjoy driving it... It's way funner, and you will find that the enthusiasm is less likely to fade so fast when you can actually drive the damn thing.

If you can drive the car, the car will be more likely to drive you to keep working on it.

Truth be told, no matter if it's a mopar, chev, ford.... Sometimes the project car can be free, an actual free car, and you'll still be upside down in the end with investment vs value.

That's ok if you are ok with it, but it's a hell of a thing to be surprised with.

that is an excellent example. I can't believe that car is still for sale.

I have thought about a driver as well, but seems like I get beat out at literally the last seconds at the auction.

He was asking 10500 a couple of weeks ago for that pile.
Wait a month or two if you have to have it and buy it for 2500.
Me personally wouldn't buy it at any #, you'll be very tired and broke when done with it.
