I have a 72 hideaway grill that needs to be repaired. I believe it to be made out of pot metal or some kind of white metal. Im reseaching how to repair pot metal.
Has anyone tried such a repair?

I came across this company who claims they can bond, fill, and repair: pot metal, cast iron, aluminum and all other other metals. http://www.muggyweld.com/?view=home

I watched these videos:http://www.muggyweld.com/?view=home

Now I have been a welder for 13 years and have only welded steel and stainless. I've used an arch and mig welder. I'm gonna give this a shot. Any tips?

i have found that welding of any kind just dont work on pot metal.too dam soft.i have used epoxy resin to repair it,but it only came out ok not great.

they aren't welding they are brazing with a torch and solder.

Let us know how that Muggy weld works out.....Striking an arc on any pot metal is useless, unless you enjoy watching metal get blown away. Interested to see how this solder based method works out for ya.

I had my quarter extensions repaired. The guy put some kind of (copper?) strip across the damaged area and coated it in solder, built it up til it filled in the area.

It will be a while till I get to try it. Was just wondering if anyone else tried this product before I go and purchase it.

Becareful of the fumes from that muggy weld. Drill out the pits, strip the anodizing then sand surfaces clean to a dull finish. Then fill pits with silver solder and a rosebud head on propane torch. After have the piece plated with copper then chrome plate. all the pits have to be drilled and soldered.

This how the shops do it. They strip the chrome, nickel, and copper. You now have a clean part. It is then copper coated. They solder the pits and holes, metal finish. Then copper again, solder, metal finish. When the part is the correct shape it get nickle, then chrome. You would be amazed how big a hole those little pits end up becoming. Not cheap.

So does advanced plating do these kinda repairs or just the plating? Where did you have this done and what was the the cost? Thanks for the response and the info.

Anyone have a finished 72 hideaway grill picture. How do they finish them? Plating then paint?

Fini Finish in Detroit is good but not cheap.

Do they make the repairs also or just the plating?

I cannot say anything about the pot metal deal, but I can speak from first hand experience about muggy weld's cast iron welding. IT WORKS. I welded two rare early Hemi 4 bolt flange HP manifolds with it and it worked just like they showed.
