Power steer pump

Can someone identify this pump, there is a PN on it 2129623-6 or 8. Its off my 67 Coronet, but I think the engine is a 73. I had it off because it leaked all the fluid out. I cleaned it all up on the outside and filled it with fluid and propped it up on the bench, but I cannot seem to find where it's leaking from. Figured for 50 60 bucks I can replace and be done with it for a while.

It's a TRW/Thompson Pump and most likely needs a re-build with new seals...
 
Does anyone have a spare one of these they would part with. Looked all over the parts stores and even some say they are available, when I go to order, thats when they say they cant get one.
 
What do you mean by "Spare"? You can buy the re-build kits at NAPA and they are readily available from the eBag. Doesn't require a lot of skill to do it. And it will help immensely if you use your FSM...Factory Service Manual...You do have one Right????
 
That is an early 60s TRW pump! Large pulley is for a small block. Is it leaking or not working at all? If it is leaking you can get new seals and O-rings! A machine shop can pull the pulley, and install the seal! Can't remember the name of the co. that rebuilds the pump! Check on the site or the internet for some one who builds them!
 
I've got the same damn pump on my car. Mine was leaking from the return line spout, was completely broken loose and free to move around. Got my butane torch and plumber's solder and soldered it together. That leak stopped. However, it was still leaking a bit and I discovered it was leaking where the "case" meets the front of the pump. Assuming a bad seal. I smothered that seam with RTV and seems to working fine for now. That TRW pump is going when the new motor goes and a proper Federal pump going in.
 
Can this TRW be replaced with a Saginaw or Federal somehow?

Got another dumbquirey for you guys. If one put the TRW pump back on the car empty and left the belt off, would it be like manual steering, would it ruin the steering box?

TRW Pump

I have one of the large TRW pumps and 2 of the small used TRW pumps like yours but they are the later 60's ones with the smaller return fitting. The small ones both turn freely but i am sure they would also need at least new seals from sitting. PM me if interested

Why not a Saginaw pump instead? You can get those new and aren't they supposed to be better?

You could probably run w/o it but why would you want to? The steering would have a lot of play for sure and I would think it just wouldn't be fun to drive. Personally I would go with a rebuild of your TRW pump. It would probably be cheaper to go that route. However in the future if at some point you have the extra coin, the time and the inclination, you can convert over to a Saginaw which from what I've read is a better pump all the way around: leaks less, less power to drive, runs cooler and is just a generally better pump. You can get the bracket from the junkyard if possible or purchase new brackets and pullys here:

You can also take the pump to your locale Auto Z and they can send it off to have it rebuilt. I had the same pump and same problem and did a bit of research. I went the way FunShip32 suggested but I found brackets at a swap meet. Now I can buy a pump off the shelf in almost any parts house in the country. The pump I used was for an '78 Olds 98. It has a much better feel now than it did before, not so light feeling.
