Hi FBBO,

I have a 1964 Dodge Polara with a 383 engine and manual steering, and I want to convert it to power steering. I might be able to get a compatible steering gearbox, but what other parts do I need for the conversion?

Are there complete conversion kits available that include everything required? I have also heard that the steering column or shaft is different for power steering, either a different diameter or shorter. Is that true? If so, is there a way to modify my existing steering column, or would I need a completely different one?

I’ve done this swap on a ‘70 only, so check cross references for parts.
1. Obviously need a power steering box, power steering pump, hoses, pulleys and brackets.
2. The power steering column center shaft is shorter than a manual steering column center shaft. You could shorten your manual steering center shaft in a “cut & weld” way because I think your steering center shaft is solid.
3. You might need a different pitman arm.

I posted this before on another thread. I got the kit from Bergman. Love it. Also great phone support. My 65 has smaller bolts than the box,I made some bushings to take up the space.

If preferring to stick with stock parts I would suggest calling Steer & Gear. They can probably the box and pump and brackets and many small parts / hoses, etc, and help point you towards anything they can’t. The steering shaft, coupler and crank pulley may be the hardest parts to find but I bet a parts wanted ad on here will surface them too. I just converted my 66 Satellite to PS.
