Power steering faillure

Hi,

I recently got quit a chock when my steering wheel startet to turn by itself all the way to the left, where it then was locked! Hapilly the engine was only at idle as the car was not moving.

I couldn't get the steering wheel back so I had to disconnect the pump and let out the pressure from the gear.

Have someone tried thes before, and what may have caused this potentially lethal faillure?

What car? I can't imagine how that would happen in an older Mopar. Maybe something really weird happened inside the power steering box itself?

Somehow the valve body on top of the steering box got loosened and bumped to one direction or the other.
Get it back to the center and everything will be fine.
Then make sure the valve body os locked down tight.

I forgot to state my vehicle: 1966 Coronet 440 Convertible.

I forgot to state my vehicle: 1966 Coronet 440 Convertible.

Happened in my 66 Belvedere convertible randomly about 20 years ago, found 3-4 control valves while packing to move.
If valve was not loose and did not move, then somehow the "which way we goin" shuttle valve got stuck one way and stayed.
I recommend pulling the valve body as it's 10 minutes work, and you'll be abe to see how side loading in the gearbox translates into toggling the flow control linkage into the valve body.
Make sure the valve seems free in travel both ways.
Mine happened in the garage, and I was starting the car from outside.
If I had reached through the wheel to start the car I probably would have had 2 or 3 fractures in my right forearm.
