I picked up a used power steering pump for my 70 Charger b/c the previous owner took it out. The cap on the one I picked up has no dipstick in it. It is just a cap. Does anyone know approx how high to fill the reservoir? e.g. 3 inches from top...... Better yet, if someone has one like mine and can just let me know the distance markings on their cap/dipstick I can figure it out from there.

I have the round canister not the oblong one.

It looks like this one.

About 1 inch from the top, the only reason not to take it higher is to allow for heat expansion. Maintaining a minimum level covering the pump itself is more important than the maximum.

I had a similar problem - only I still have the pump, the previous owner just removed the belt. My cap has no dipstick either - but I can see the top of the pump sticking out above the fluid. Thanks for the tip - I'll make sure it's filled up enough to cover the pump before I install the new belt.
