Power steering flush

Hey guys I just wanted to make sure I was going to attempt to do this right. Working on my Roadrunner, it's got a federal style power steering pump. The fluid is dirty/milky and needs to be flushed. To do this I would just disconnect the return line at the pump, stick in a container and continue adding fluid until it runs clear right? All this would be done with the engine running of course.
 
You didn't mention how are you going to add fluid during this process? I am guessing you will be adding fresh fluid via the return connection on the pump? Or, are you going to add via the filler location? You will need a long funnel to do that, because if you try with the motor running, the fan is gonna blow fluid all over the place trying it that way!
 
Thanks for that, I probably would've come back on here in a few days asking how to clean up power steering fluid in an engine bay. So are you saying hook up another hose to the return side of the pump and stick in clean fluid...damn never thought of that either that would be another way to go as well.

So I would essentially have two hoses on the return side of the system. The hose hooked to the pump would be in a fresh bottle of power steering fluid, sucking out the clean fluid. The hose connected to the return line of the gear box would be puking out nasty fluid into a catch until it runs clear.
 
Make sure the wheels are on the ground otherwise the valving in the box and pump just does a bypass and you don't get any benefit. If you are not worried about the oe look, NAPA sells an inline 3/8" trans filter that can be used as a p/s filter. It also contains a magnet inside of it.
