I have a 66 Coronet that I put a 440 in. We put flo-tech headers on it and have a clearance issue with the steering gear. Are there any smaller gears that will work to make more room for the headers?

I suppose you could go to a manual box.

not sure why,but that seems to be a common problem on 66/67 cars.i run a manual box and still had to bend my hedders a bit to clear it.

I had the same problem with my 66. I pulled off the steering box off and slotted the two mounting holes at the top (of the steering box). I slotted the holes about a quarter of an inch. I didn’t have to slot the bottom hole. It tilted the steering box away from the headers. That was three years ago. It worked perfect. Make sure you use lock tight on the steering box bolts.

thanx a ton.what a cool idea, wish i would have thought of that before i moded my headders.

Another solution would be to put a spacer under the left side motor mount and slightly tilt the engine away from the steering box. Luckily slotting the mounting holes solved my clearance problems. I’m running an elderbrock rpm intake under a stock hood with a mopar unsilence breather and I’m sure the breather would have hit the hood if I had tilted the engine up.
