I have a leak in the power steering of my 69 RR. I used the flourescent dye and tracked the leak down to the pressure side fitting at the steering box. I replaced the pressure side line when I was doing the recent engine rebuilt. The leak is coming from the threads and through the top of the fitting. It is plenty tight. I tried a little thread sealer and that did not help at all. Is this an appropriate place to try some teflon tape? Any other suggestions. The power steering did leak some with the old hose, but I don't remember it being this bad.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Yes try the tape, it could be your cheap fix. Have you compared the ends, are they the same? Defected hose maybe? I wonder if your pumps pressure is a little high? I can't give a honest answer without seeing what's up. Good Luck

Teflon tape was never intended to seal straight threads or flare fittings.

I had the same problem earlier this year. The fitting was plenty tight, but still leaking. I tried teflon tape too, but to no avail. I removed the nipple that connects the line to the steering box and found a tiny crack in that nipple. I mean TINY! I replaced the nipple and the problem was gone. It hasn't leaked a drop since. Good luck.

Where did you get that fitting from???

A buddy of mine nearby has a salvage yard - got it from him. You can probably get one from Steer & Gear in Columbus, OH too. That's where I got my new updated steering box. They're good guys.

If I remember correctly, there is supposed to be a copper washer under that fitting and leaks are a memory.

I got a level 3 from steer n gear.... never looked back  As for the line I would suspect cheap/chinese... that stuff can be hit n miss

Look over the flare female / line end real good. Its more of a chance that end has a poor flare or hairline crack. You can crack that female end if you crank down on it to much.

Yeah, I forgot about that washer. Yep, make sure that's there too.
