I need to put the pulley on the left on the pump on the right. It appears the pulley on the left is pressed on and the shaft is larger than the one on the right, also the shaft on the right is tapped for threads.

Do I need to find a different pulley that will work for the pump on the right?

The pumps look exactly the same, guess they made different shaft diameters and pulley installation methods?

Dang it!

Thanks

I believe there are actually 3 different types of shafts for these TRW pumps- Internally threaded, solid and hex. As such I would suspect you need the right shaft/pulley setup.

Those pumps are not the same. Look at the outlet. They might work in the same application, but they are not the same. Both look to be press on pulleys, and I've been down this road with that type of pump. You can pull the one off with a puller. If the shafts are the same diameter (and I do mean exactly the same) it might work on the other pump. You will need to remove the pump from the canister to press it on or use the threads in the shaft to pull it on. Do not press it on with the canister in place.

I think the threaded one is a later year pump- I think the early ones weren't tapped. Also be sure that the pump outlet is the right type and threading- some use an o-ring (late, I think), some use flare-type seat (early). There were also different OD return ports.

This is the style puller you need to remove the pulley without damaging it. When pressing the new one on you need to support opposite side of shaft only, not pump housing

Thanks everyone for the replies, right now I am wondering if it is worth it to pull the old pulley or search for a new pulley with the same style shaft - I am doubting the old pulley will work on the other pump.

No need to use a press on a threaded shaft. The referenced kit is also an installer. The pulley should fit the other shaft, as they are the same diameter. I do not believe that I have ever seen a different size shaft for the pulley.

Well, I am learning some power steering pump stuff here, a good thing I guess...

I got the puller kit and pulled the pulley off, it doesn't fit the other pump (threaded shaft is smaller).

Plus the pump with the threaded shaft has a different style high pressure hose seal (O ring I guess) does this mean I need a different hose?

Now I guess I need a replacement pulley with a smaller shaft hole and a different style high pressure hose. Double dang it!

Suggestions appreciated.

If you are going to use the threaded shaft pump i would put an ad on the want to buy forums here clearly stating you want to buy a power steering pump any condition with good serviceable unbent pulley for "post 68 federal power steering pump indicated by threads in hole at end of pulley shaft on the pulley end". You should be able to use that puller to seat, Set up as puller/installer in following link on page 13 or use grade 8 bolt that fits threads of shaft, thread a nut up shaft and then multiple flat washers to prevent bending then place pulley on shaft, insert end of bolt fully in shaft hole and holding bolt end with wrench thread nut down to press pulley on . Grease between puller/ or bolt installer parts including threads to reduce friction. Install as shown on page 13 in PDF. Call steer and gear for appropriate hose.
