Hey all,
Trying to figure out how bad this is leaking, by the amount of crap caked on around the pump and steering box it seems to be leaking pretty bad. I was thinking I should replace the pump, but now I am think maybe by starting on just replacing the line. What I can't figure out is which pump this is. Can anybody help? From looking on parts sites it should be the saginaw w/o reservoir, but this clearly has a reservoir.

Also, any idea what the 'G' on the valve cover is?

Your pump does not appear to be a Saganaw. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the one you have. I had the same type pump on a 68 Barracuda I used to have. I actually took the pump apart, cleaned it up, and just replaced the seal between the actual pump and the resivior. Do also check for any cracks on the return line nipple.

Hopefully, someone can tell you the correct pump type name.

Miller thanks, mine definitely as the large notch, so TRW pump. I will look for an overhaul kit to put new seals in it. I would think replacing all the line would be a good idea as well. Any ideas where I can find new lines and the overhaul kit?

Any parts house worth it's salt (good luck on that!), would have, or can order the overhaul kit.
Yeah, real good idea to replace any rubber hoses, especially if they have any age. Possible to find new lines, or find a place that can make it, like a hydraulic hose outfit.

Gotta do the same deal on my build. Flat don't think much on 'overhauled' parts, especially these days. If you want it done right...do it yourself!

Gentlemen,
I also agree...its the TRW pump....leakage could be coming from the shaft seal, the housing to resevoire body seal or the inverted flair seat where the high pressure fitting fits into the pump.
It would be my suggestion to use a HYDRAULIC OIL, and not ATF as the internals of the pump are different than an autotrans. Mobil DTE medium (ISO VIS 46) oil would be ideal. Vane pumps and cam and roller pumps require a oil with an anti-wear anti-foam package. ISO VIS 32 will also be a great choice. ISO VIS = Internationl Viscosity Index number ranging from 32 - 46 - 68 index number....FYI...
Cheers,
RJ Renton

Keep the original. Just build it. You know it fits, you know it works, you know it's correct. Cheaper for the seal kit anyhow...

Agree with Renton on the fluid type. Needs a high grade hydraulic oil.

If you don't have a service manual, get one. It'll tell you all you want to know on OHC the pump.
No idea on the G.

Rockauto has all the kits and hoses you may need and well organised by year/model on their site too, even if just helpful to get correct part numbers. NAPA, O'Reillys etc can order them too...

Often the leak from these PS pumps is just the o-ring that seals the cast iron pump body into the sheetmetal reservior. Piss easy to change (once clean) and you may not need to strip it right down to fully re-kit. Getting the pulley off if you need to re-kit is a real biatch without the right puller!!

I just reread jimt1971rr reply. Same experience as me. Return hose nipple is soft soldered into reservoir and mine broke while yanking off stiff old hose. Was easy to re-solder though.

Oh, body o-ring is a 2-245 (4-3/8'' X 4-5/8'' X 1/8'' ) and less than $1 from a bearing/seal shop.

Jumped into mine with both feet. It's been stored for years, going on full re-build.

Besides the o-ring 62 Dart mentions, there is a main seal, 'behind' the pulley, that seals the shaft. Means more tear down, including the pulley. But, all that is your call...how many times you want to fix it?

I will toss in that, most of the time, when those pumps need to be replaced/fixed, it's because of leaks. Otherwise, their pretty tough.

Yup. Exact same pump. Completely busted down. Every o-ring and seal were like rock.

Actually have two pumps, and busted both down. One of 'em...someone had so-called overhauled it, since all the rubber was still soft. But, must not have gone together with it right, having way too much end play on the shaft. Rear pump surface scored bad enough to turn it into junk.

Both hoses for my 64 available at Napa.
