Since our parts are slowly getter harder to come by, I am wondering if the different types of PS pumps are interchangeable as long as you use the correct brackets. Will they line up with the belts? Are they all compatible with the steering boxes? Big block and small block the same with the proper brackets? Do the pulley diameters make a big difference? Just wondering. I tried to search for this topic but didn't see it.

Not an expert but the different pumps, Federal, TRW//Thompson, Saginaw should all work with the PS box as far as I know. With the proper bracket on the engine it should line up OK with the other pulleys, provided they too are correct for the engine. Pumps with pressed on pulleys can have the pulleys adjusted slightly on the shaft although to press the pulley on the shaft further would require disassembly of the pump. A pulley puller can pull it out slightly if set too deep. Early pumps/boxes (through 1966) use a 5/8” return hose. Pumps and boxes after that used a small hose (1/2”?). This has to be coordinated although the return valve/hose nipple on the box is a separate piece and may be interchangeable - not sure on that. Also, there are 3 different angle return valve/hose nipples available - 0 degrees, 45 degrees, and 90 degrees. Not sure which goes with what but my 440 GTX has a 45 degree one and my 66 Hemi has a 90 degree one to clear the exhaust manifold.

About all I know, or think I know.

Thank you. I may try to convert all my cars to the newer Saginaw type. I believe they are 1969 and up?

I think I mis-spoke above about being able to re-set the pulley on all the pumps. I believe pulleys are secured on Federal pumps with a bolt. Not sure about Saginaw. Both of my cars have TRW pumps.

Do or are you having a PS pump problem??.....or is this just a fishing / future reference exercise? Consult your FSM and PARTS MANUALS for interchangeably......most PS pumps are specific to vehicle, engine, hose routing, brackets, sheave arrangement, belt circumference......there is no one size fits all application........just my opinion......
