Pre-1968 440 Motor Question

Do pre-1968 440 motors require special lifters? Comp Cams suggests a different style lifter for these years of motors. Why?

Maybe solid flat tappets instead of hydraulic? A lot of older engines had solid cams.

It is because of the pushrods used in those years. The end that goes into the lifter has a smaller radius than in the later years.

But you can use the later lifter if you swap out the push rods. My rebuilds get new push rods anyways. After all, they are a wear item too.
