Pre production Viper ordered crushed

Signed!

Why don't they just offer to remove the engine from the car, and put it on a specially built dyno. then use the car body/ frame, and the engine seperatly. I can't imagine that they will actually go off and actually destroy it

Hmmm.

It still belongs to Chrysler?

"Donated" Educational cars are always somewhat of a problem.

My High School auto shop program had several donated from factory or dealer vehicles including-

A 1970 6 cyl auto firebird and a 1985 v6 5 speed blazer, each with less than 150 miles.

Neither were titled or registered and neither had a VIN tag, the blazer's having the rivets drilled out through the glass!
Each had paperwork from gm and the dealership, though, and were the property of the school.

We were supposed to use them for training on "new" vehicles, but in reality most were rarely touched, except the firebird at some point was given a horrible paint job in orange, over the factory light green.

We did get to drive them around the parking lots, though and into and out of the shop, whoopeee!!

I campaigned several times, unsuccessfully, to to put a 455 in the pontiac, and start a school sponsored drag racing program.

Put it in a Museum. It is American Iconic Culture at its best. The two that were crashed were wrecked by the person driving it not knowing their limits or the potential of the car. This is driven by the PC, liability police.

Name wasn't Ferris by chance?

Pretty sad to see F/C wants these cars destroyed. Due to acts of a few, many will suffer the loss. I don't agree with the liability being on F/C. The schools should be the ones made to pony up any reparations. I know they take a lot of my money!

I'm sure Chrysler has paper work saying they have rights to the car. This reminds me of the turbine car and only a few were 'saved' and this one should be 'saved' too if you get my drift. If I had the means, I'd sure try to 'save' the thing lol

There's something wrong with that article. They're saying it was car #4 off the line. Yet the pictures are showing a coupe, something that Dodge didn't even make until the second generation starting in 1996. All of the 1992-1995 cars were roadsters, there was no GTS coupe yet. Also, all the early models had 3 spoke wheels, these are later 5 spokes, so what are we looking at here?

You are absolutely right. Car is a 96 GTS, not a preproduction 92. It may be a preproduction model of the first 96 GTS. I owned the 12th 96 GTS made and sold it for 39K. It certainly wasn't worth several hundred thousand dollars. This is somehow all messed up with misinformation. The Viper plant already has a 96 GTS on display, complete with sunroof and other modifications made to the the ones used as pace cars for the 96 Indy 500.

There was another article talking about these cars too, 94 some odd cars just like this, 2 were stolen from the vocational facilities, article on Yahoo.com news {sorry no link}, the Coupe in question had a prototype hard top, it was not a production vehicle, it was given to use "for educational purposes", in the Community College & later a HS Vocational Automotive courses, in Washington state somewhere IIRC.. 2 students literally stole cars, IIRC at different educational facilities {with out permission from the school complex or c} & joyriding them, wrecked property &/or hurt someone or something along those lines, causing many of the liability issues... Chrysler has sole ownership & has always been the sole owners of these cars, it's their choice what can be done with them... I'd like to see them saved also, so many of the concept & prototype cars, good or bad cars {nobody complains about the FUGLY ones being crushed} are mandatorily DESTROYED !!, it's been going on since the beginning of concepts/prototypes or other such practices, some kind of BS, federal law crap... The real problems IMHFO, are the scum sucking lawyers of the world... How in the world, where someone steals a car & the owner of the car "is liable" for damages incurred or injuries, or some other second party liability issues, because of these scumbag ambulance chaser type lawyers or the true thieves, that are so proliferate today... Because it cheaper to pay off the lawsuit, than fight anymore... This forces the hands of corporations, so the owners {Chrysler in this case}, just destroy the cars & get rid of all the responsibility/liability issues... They are just another car & a liability to them... Like I said before I'd like to see them saved too, it's not my call thou...

I don't understand why Chrysler can't sell these cars to some kind of broker who can turn around and sell/auction the cars to the general public. Like Bud says, the lawyers would probably argue that the factory is responsible for these cars forever, no matter how many times they changed hands or who owns them. It's complete BS, but you never know what a judge or jury might do. All they see is a big company with deep pockets. Sad.

First off I agree that it would be horrible to crush this car. And I can't even begin to follow the logic on this. Crush a car because of some joyriders?? Joyriders take the car out and cause damage (otherwise who would know?). Damage gets reported to police and ultimately the **** rolls to the bottom of the hill where the insurance money is. Ah ha! Money! So does crushing the car immediately magically reverse the insurance payout? How is crushing this car going to solve the problem? Prevent future or potential problems yes, but that can be done by parking it in Leno's garage. Perhaps there were no joyriders and this is just a bunch of BS to run up the price of Vipers. The only reason this car would have to be destroyed is to get out of paying taxes.
