Prime a motor

are you talking oil prime??? if so YES there is....a number of companies make a hex rod thatabour 24inches in lenght that attaches to a drill....you drop rod in through the distributor hole to mate up to the oil pump gear drive..and squeeze the trigger...to be sure oil reaches all the top end slowly rotate engine over by hand at the crank nut..once the oil flows through the rocker arms and all arm are seein oil...engine is oil primed. and ready to start... heres a couple of links for ya

Yeah, you can turn it over by hand every every 90 degrees or so to make sure all the passages see oil.

My last motor build hibernated all last winter and to keep anything from rusting I primed it a couple of times.

No one has mentioned it but you will have to remove the intermediate shaft. I usually used a big screwdriver to twist it gently while pulling up.

Make sure you take note of how it was installed as it's easy to get a tooth off. Don't ask how I know...

Yes don't put the drive gear in wrong. Put it back where you found it. Also mark your distributor rotor so you don't put it back in 180* out.

I've also made my own priming tool with a cut off section of the appropriate sized alan head wrench welded to a length of steel rod. There's actually a lot of stress on the tool once oil pressure is achieved so a lot of really hot weld penetration is needed. Don't ask how I know this.

And yah, counter clockwise.

if you have a 1/2 inch drill i would use it. the smaller ones heat up pretty quick and forget anyone with a battery power.

I'm a welder by trade.Any one know what allen wrench size it is? I'll make one if I can. Also, this engine was aquired in a swap. How do I tell if the intermediate shaft and gear are correct to begin with??? Looks like it has a new cam, its covered in assembly lube.

Not sure of the allen wrench size but you can test fit by pulling out the gear drive and testing different sizes. Or if you have an oil pump on the shelf that would be easier. I usually find TDC which should put the slot for the distributor in line with the cam. Use some long needle nose pliers to pull out the gear.
If you think that it has a new cam and lifters then you should also be doing a proper cam break-in procedure.

X2 on the 1/2" drill

not sure of the size of the allen, not near mine right now.not that big of a deal with the alignment of intermediat shaft, just means you will have to set up the distributer like you are doing it with a new one.tdc, align rotor to #1 and adjust to get started.then set timming with light.

You should read a thread I started on this a while ago called NO OIL PRESSURE when I primed mine 440. YOU NEED A 5/16 HEX that goes into the oil pump. I made mine and wrapped it with some shrink tubing in spots so it does not mar the bushing that is down in there. You only get oil up top through the #4 cam bearing hole so that has to line up for the left bank and right bank to see oil at the rockers.

Cool beans....My intake is off right now so its easier to see the drive gear. If I'm reading the above right, I don't need to worry so much how the gear goes back in as log as I need to basic time the distributor anyway!??!

Check out my thread DISTRIBUTOR LIGNUP PROBLEMS TOO.Thats correct. I tried to align the gear slot from front to back of car but was told that did not matter just make room to swing the di tributor.

Boy you must have a girly battery drill. :icon_albino:
I've been using my Dewalts 14.4v drills for years to prime BB's with 15w40. Can run it for several minutes at full pressure.
