Primer question...

I've been prepareing my engine bay for painting and after removing all the paint, crud and grease sprayed it with a 1K etching primer (used the expensive Dupont in a aerosol can like $20 purchased from my local paint supply store). It's been on the metal about a month and is really adhered. I was about to shoot the engine bay, cowl area and other prepared areas with a HB Polyester primer/surfacer I bought from Eastwood (Morton is the manufacturer). The primer directions says not to spray over 1K or 2K etching primer. Question is what happens if I do. As mentioned earlier the lK has been on there for over a month and in really on. Hate to think I have to remove all the 1K.

It could very well react and ruin your Polyester surfacer.

On a side note, anything that comes from a spray can is sub par to something that comes out of a spray gun. Hardener CANNOT be put into a spray can, therefore it never fully cures like something that is mixed and shot with hardener. I understand working on a bugdet, but would never use a spray can for something that I wanted to turn out really nice. Now if its something that you are looking to throw together quick, thats a different story.

It will cause the poly prime to lift or crack years down the road.Sand down the etch prime a little and put a nice coat of dp90 over it.This will seal everything up real well and allow you to make repairs over it.DP90 is a standby for almost all type of resto or repaints.

Hardener CAN be put into a spray can, actually. I've got some and it works really well. There's a valve on the bottom of the can that, when pushed, opens a second internal container of hardener that mixes when shaken. And, just like in a spray gun, it has a very limited life. Once you mix it, it has to be used up in a couple of hours before it hardens inside the can.

I'll have to go out to the shop tomorrow and check on the brand that I'm talking about...

X2 on the epoxy primer. DP90 or any good brand of automotive epoxy primer. This will seal of the self etching primer.

Picked up some epoxy primer for sealing the etch primer. Thanks for all the comments.
