Alright gentlemen, put on those thinking caps and lets have a conversation. I have just gotten off the phone with my machinist and the diagnosis is bad...Not only were all of my valves burnt and a few bent, but the heads are warped to high heaven. So the motor is a 1967 383 2barrel no CAP, It had 516 heads. I am on a budget, the max I can spend is $600. I want 350-400 flywheel hp out of the motor with as low of compression as I can (8.5-9.2 to 1.) I am going to be driving this car everyday, with the intention of it being a sleeper. I am not going to have an overly aggressive cam (max .500 lift) With that in mind...What heads should I get? Also do you think it would be better to buy re-built heads, or cores and rebuild myself? Thank you in advance for your help, This forum is full of a lot of helpful and knowledgeable people and that's what keeps me here.

Joe

heads

go for the 440 source heads they are cheaper!the valve springs are good up to a 600 lift cam, bolt em on and go

Indy Cylinder Heads has rebuilt open chamber heads for $499 a pair with 2.14 and 1.81 stainless valves, bronze valve guides, springs that will handle up to .509 lift., chrome moly retainers, and 7 degree locks. indyheads.com

X2...and I have never seen a set of big block heads with that much wrong with them I think you need a new machine shop..Artie

More HP, low CR and $600.00 does not sound like a good recipe to me. A 383 Road Runner engine was rated at 335 HP at I think 5200 RPM and that's as good as it gets with a factory single 4BBL 383. 350-400 HP from the same displacement will require the capability for more RPM. To get more RPM that's usually done with cam, heads and exhaust and you can't run a big cam with low CR and expect good results.

I'm guessing your $600.00 limit is for heads only? Even at that you're not going to get very far unless you get a good deal on a set that was already reworked.

As an example I have a pretty good sleeper going with my 440 and it goes against the grain of a lot of popular builds. Iron heads and intake and small cam but it has compression. A bit too much for pump gas so I have to put a splash of 110 per tank full. Don't know the HP but it covers the 1/4 in a 3700 lb 66 Belvedere at a low 13 @ 109 on street tires and 3.55 gears.

Thanks for all of the great suggestion!! I talked to my machinist on Sunday, Some wise old sage tried a home porting job on my old heads, as well as 3 angle valve job. Needless to say whom ever did it was not a professional. Thus I need new heads. I apologize but I left out a very important point ( I was at work when I originally posted and missed it) I plan on putting on a t04 42 trim turbo, rear mounted with inter cooler. That is the reason for a low compression motor. Keep those suggestions coming, have a great day.

That'll blow the $600.00 budget.

I have everything already, Blow thru carb, intercooler, turbo, and the majority of the piping. The heads appeared to be in good shape so I wasn't planning on replacing them...then I got the motor apart. So my "Oh Shoot" budget is going into heads instead of me having a buffer in my budget. That is the reason for the $600 budget. I found a pair of 906 heads with 208/174 valves, hardened seats and bronze guides for $350, I think that is what I am looking for but I am not sure...

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I'll second that good deal quote. 906's are good heads. Now you have money left over!!
