if you have a 383 Charger, Coronet, or Satellite, then P is for Premium Fuel.(The 5th digit of the VIN will be H ) my 340 has a P behind it, 68-71. My 72' has an R., for regular fuel(8.5 compression)
Sweet, this 383 is not the original one according to the vin numbers by the bell housing rail and based on some receipts I got with the car it would appear one of the previous owners in the late 80's had been talking with a clerk at a speed shop here in Norcal and you can see he was trying to tell the guy which blocks were HP blocks and what to look for when hunting in junk yards on the back of a receipt. Looks like he scored not only a year correct 383 but a matching HP motor which would have came with the car originally cha ching! I'm keeping it, was going to drop in my buddies 68 barracuda once he got all the stuff needed for the swap but he is slacker with no money so this block stays with me. Man I wish we still had yards full of 440's and 383's to go hunt for those were the days!
That block is a four barrel engine, which is good! Higher compression ratio. Regarding the Barracuda, you need an A body block, which is different than the B or C body 383 engines. The Dart/Cuda has only one ear at the top, in order to accomadate the different Big block Mount for A body cars.
