What is the purpose of the weight that is bolted to the rear of the transmission?

I would think to disapate harmonic's and vibration, ford cars have them hanging all over, had a newer ford on the lift the other day and they had them hanging by the front wheels by the spindle.

Only on LP cars. HP cars didn't have them. 71-4 B had it mounted to the tunnel.

When did Chrysler start using them? I don't recall ever seeing them on cars of the mid to late 60's and never saw then on any E body cars...even LP ones.

I have always removed mine with no adverse effects. As far as I am concerned, it is 10 lbs of dead weight.
