This might sound like a dumb question but I always heard that the dumb question was the one you didn't ask, anyway, is there a filter in the trans if they placed one "in-line" on the outside, next to the engine pan? Or is this one just added protection? (1962, 361ci. Polara 500)

there is a small metal screen in the tranny......

its just a steel filter mesh that you can clean and re use

the 904 pushbutton did as well as the steel filter my 63 727 pushbutton had the felt like one with the big and little holes...
1962 brought the addition of a canister-style fluid filter installed in the cooler line. For 1964, the canister filter was eliminated, and the transmission's internal intake screen was replaced by an efficient Dacron filter. Fluid life starting in 1964 was extended from 12,000 mi (19,000 km) to 50,000 mi (80,000 km), providing justification for the deletion of the drain plug from the oil pan.

Great information! I know that 727 is one tough tranny. I even had a dead battery one night and tried the drift start in low gear. Started right up like popping a clutch! Thanks again for your reply...

From the picture you posted it looks like you have a freeze plug leaking or maybe morethan one.

Good Eyes! As a matter of fact there are several, even one on the other side that won't even hold water at all. Bought the car like that. I'm planning on rebuilding a '62 413 to replace this engine...

I always thought the canister was run in conjunction with the dacron filter because my 62 had both. I finally pulled the in line filter out and ran all new lines because I installed a new trans cooler. Never had an issue.

Someone installed a '64-'65 (you hope!) Dacron filter in place of the original screen on your '62.

The second hole is for the rear pump inlet. On modified race units we remove the rear pump and run the standard late model filter. You can also swap the input shaft and reaction shaft support to use the late style converters (67 and up).

No body is freaking out that this guy has the original in-line filter? I've never seen one of those still in place. That's cool.
